Kowboy here; I'm curious if there are any success stories w/ the Hurst shifter install. Did you do any alterations, what year truck, how is truck driven as in highway town or hard and how long it's been installed. The problem with the internet is mainly the disappointed people post, happy consumers just enjoy what they have. I just want to know if anyone would recommend this conversion. Thanks all; Kowboy

I've had one in my 91 for about 6 years, maybe longer?!
Initially I found that the retaining bolts would loosen over time even with thread lock.
In order to solve the issue, I machined a recess in the spacer & trimmed the rubber seal to fit inside the recess. No more issues, & nothing leaks.
Overall I'm very happy with the shifter.

HeyTee Rev; If I've read the technical section right, you have the same tranny as I do: M5OD-R1. That's gonna be helpful for me to know. I really want this shifter but don't want any oiling issue. Thanks my friend, Kowboy

never had one but have driven two rangers with them, didnt like, I want my shifter where its in easy reach with out having to lean over to shift, and they just seem stiff shifting, may have been the install or something I guess, if you dont like the loose factory units, then you would love it, but then again I grew up on the old GM Muncie Linkage, and there way to high priced!!!

Hey Road Angels; I understand the reach issue can be a problem, people are sized differently and sit at different distances from the steering wheel as well. I was really looking for the mechanics of the product and whether it failed there or not. As a younger man I would pull on my 4-speed shifters so hard, that I some times ended up below the windshield. I'd have to re-situate myself to see where I was headed. I was kind of wiry back then. "A 60's boy" Thanks Kowboy

With the limited response, I'll assume there hasn't been much success w/the shifter or not much interest in this old tired thread. I have found that you can extend the shifter w/a homemade metal bracket, easy enough for anyone to make, or by purchasing any number of shift bars made by Hurst. They do have a wide selection that will bolt directly to the ranger unit they sell. I am dumb founded by the number of people that have put the lever on trucks that are not approved by Hurst. I believe, that model years 89 -2003, are only approved and trucks w/ a 4.0 may not be approved in some years. For better info you should go to Hurst's site, don't rely on mine alone. I cannot say what differences there are in say a 2007 and a 2000 model year tranny but, in my research, the problems have come with users trying to adapt the Hurst unit to unapproved years. I have visited another Ranger Forum where many have successfully placed the unit on their trucks and enjoyed them for years. I am now going forward with purchasing one for my 2000 3.0 and w/ fingers crossed and a prayer will put it on my truck.

I have heard good things about the Hurst unit, and would like to get one for my truck as I do very much miss my crooked shifter, but I haven't been able to figure out if these things will work with the manual 4x4.

?????????????
My Hurst shifter is a good 6" closer to me in neutral as compared to the stock shifter. I used to have an issue slamming my hand into the dash on a 2-3 power shift with the stock shifter, but that's definitely no issue with the Hurst.

Today, I called the people at Hurst and talked to one of their technicians. Their feeling is that they have been selling this shifter since 1988 and there have been very few complaints. They say there is a seal in the internal mechanism, that when broken, is not reusable and needs replacing. Any leaks, they say, are probably due to the unit being disassembled and put back without replacing w/ a new sealing gasket. They also alluded to overfilling the tranny and the use of wrong tranny fluids.. Blame Game???? I am not saying, but maybe some truth in this. Kowboy

Maybe he put it in backwards.

I had a 94 with a 4.0 and I ran it gorb2 yrs before I sold it I will say I wouldn't want a ranger without it...for the manual t case question a buddy had one in his fx4 lvl 2 and there was absolutely no clearance issues

I wasn't worried about clearance so much as fit and finish. It gets cold here and I want the floor sealed up.

ive had my hurst for over 5 years now, used loctite on all the hardware, made a extention using a all-thread connector and a short peice of 3/8-16 thread. extended the knob about 3" higher than it would have been on the stock hurst lever, ive not had any problems with mine, yes it is a little noisier than the stock setup, but its well worth it, i get another ranger std shift, the first mod is going to be a hurst!

That's good news RASCAN. So you didn't feel any need to use sealants or replace the cork washer supplied by HURST. I am going to place my order ASAP w/ Amazon.com. They have the shifter the cheapest that I have found and w/ free shipping. I think $236. I did look at your photos and liked your tilt bed. cool!! I also noticed the sticker on your state license plate. Thanks my friend; Kowboy
