I have a 92 4x4 4.0L with a hurst shifter that keeps getting leaks. does the hurst shifter not have a breather? Ive fixed the seal 3 times it seems like pressure caused it to blow. If anyone else has had this happen and made a breather that works ide like to know how

The trans has a vent of it's own, if it is building pressure in the trans, that vent is plugged.

Hurst needs to get kicked in the nuts, they dont sell the seals for shifter, and they wont warranty it either. now I have to order one in take the seal out of the box and return it.

i made my own seals out of gasket paper, it still builds a little pressure in the case, when i check the level you can feel it with your fingers, but all the seals are holding. the way the trans vents in stock form is that seal around the stub shaft that the shifter lever attaches to, its sealed in nuetral but in any gear the edge of the seal is pulled away slightly from the shaft. when you change to a hurst, those parts are no longer there. i tried adding a vent, but it would only blow oil out it.

I squished the remains of the rubber hurst seal between 2 paper gaskets, it still leaks a bit, enough to make me want to fix it.

There is a vent tube. I build these trannies! If you are building pressure in the trans, your vent tube is plugged! that is all there is to it! Find out why! This is very important!
In my area mud bees like to plug any hole they can find. that is probably your problem.
Also, there are three rubber plugs in the back of the top plate of the trans, They tend to leak. the tech section has a fix for it.

wheres the vent tube, the only one I found was on the t case

maybe the newer ones have a vent tube, but my '93 has none and when i had to get a rebuilt trans for it, the rebuilt unit did not have one either. both axles and the transfer case have vent tubes.
