Human lift for engine?

Wouldn't trust it one bit. Likely more than strong enough for a person, but person & engine are not the same. Not to be rude but if it fails, 500 lbs of flesh and bones is going to do less damage than 500 lbs of iron. There are a whole lot of reasons rattling around in my head why it would not be agood idea, just not good at comitting those to text.

If you don't have the money to buy an engine hoist, you can probably find a rental if you search around.

Although I understand what Josh is saying, 500 lbs is 500lbs whether it’s cast iron or human flesh or feathers. With that said, I would not want it for an engine lift. Always maintain an adequate safety margin. 200% expected load would be minimum. You could easily end up wanting to lift engine+ transmission, fully dressed. Wait until you can get something rated 750 or 1000 lbs capacity. And longer reach.

If all I messed with was 4cyl car engines i would consider it. But I’ve never paid more than $100 for the three engine hoists I’ve purchased in my lifetime. Including the Mac unit I have now.

Sometimes I wish the legs folded up.

I have one. Its come in very handy numerous times. I've used it to swap a 2.2l neon engine. The legs are low enough to get under pretty much any car. Those are built with at least 3 to 1 safety margin, but I probably wouldn't lift a big block with it. Iirc mine is rayed to 350lbs. I'll check later.

I would expect a device to lift a disabled person would have a much higher safety margin built into it's rating then a cheap engine hoist.

Probably be ok. The engine hoists I've use weren't that great to begin with, I feel this would be less desirable due to due the shorter length of the arm.

I prefer a chain hoist myself. Only issue is that you need something to hook it to.

Safe working load on mine is 400lbs. And yes, they have a short arm. Its handy for small engines and ride on lawnmowers.

One of those woulda been handy in my dune buggy shop.

I'm sure it would work fine for an RBV but by the time it's stabbed in an engine bay the lift point would be about at the radiator and wouldn't have enough safety factor to get to the center of the engine...

Pass, the paint is worth more than the metal. What compliance does it meet? Where was it made? How safe is the engineering? (what's that?) Taking your own life in yours and others hands. Sorry, my life is worth more than that failing unexpectedly. It looks pretty wimpy.

Agreed.

Look at the fine print. I think that’s an alternator lift.

If I didn’t need my feet anymore, that’s exactly what I’d use…

I think Harbor freight sells a couple that are very cheap, but also very reliable.
