Hi, everyone. I'm Sam, and I just joined. I recently purchased a 1987 2.9 Ranger STX 4X4, but here's where it gets weird. I've researched for days on here so I can make this as easy as possible for y'all and help you help me.
It's got the trans code "D" which is supposed to be the FM145, BUT someone put in the TK4, and reverse is out. Now, I'm so confused with reading conflicting answers about the TK4 either being way shorter than the FM145 and needing modified driveshafts, or it being the same length and swapping in fine. I don't know what driveshafts are in there. I literally cannot find an FM145 anywhere, and if I did, I don't even know if I'd need to find the FM145 driveshafts, since so far, this truck drives fine except for a weird clattering sound up front (it's not an engine sound), which again makes me wonder which shafts are in there. I'm thinking about just having this rebuilt so I can have reverse.
Another question: The clutch is bad, and so I may want to replace the flywheel with it. I've read that the 2.8 and 2.9 flywheels are interchangeable, but some have the bearing pressed into the flywheel, and some are pressed onto the input shaft. I have a feeling whoever did this swap may not have know that, so *IF* I go to change flywheels, is there a way for me to know which is correct?
I apologize for any confusion, but I'm just overwhelmed with all these different transmissions, and years, and stuff, and all I want is a working truck with 4x4.
Thanks so much,
Sam
