okay guys, im very new to the ranger scene. ive only owned my truck for 2 days. and when i go into 4 wheel drive, it engages but when i let off the gas, i hear like a grinding. at first i thought the transfer case fluid was low, i checked it and changed it while i was at it. and i took it out and it still did it. i called the guy i bought it from and he said that it might be the hubs not engaging completley. Could someone please help me??

If it has automatic hubs, it's very likely the hubs. They are not known for their reliability.

I would make the switch to manual lockouts if that's what it turns out to be.

it has the manual hubs, they are only about 1 year old but they have sit most of the time. could they need to be re-greased?

they could be not something to hard to try why not try it and see if it helps make sure nothing is touching your front drive shaft either

Is anything in the front driveline loose? (pinion, u-joints, etc.)? Fluid in front diff OK?

yeah, i checked everything last night and it all seems to be tight, i checked the front diff oil and it was a little high but thats about it. it almost sounds like the hubs are trying to engage but just grinding. last night i took it to a parking lot and i put it in 4wd and locked one hub at a time, the noise was still there but not as bad, thats what made me think that it was the hubs, i think im gonna try to re grease them.

Check to make sure there isn't TOO much grease in them, which will prevent them from engaging properly (they only need a thin film on all the internal parts).

the guy i bought it from said he used the recommended amount so maybe there is no grease? possibly? due to the truck sitting for a year.
