my warn hub busted so i got an auto one from picknpull.. and now in 2wd it makes a clicking road while driving? anyone know what could cause this?

i have a 99 ranger with phv's and they click in 2wd. thats kinda how i tell if they disengaged or not... but it is annoying. i think its a normal noise for my year though, and i believe if i buy avm hubs they will be quiet in any mode. or someone might correct me on that?

YOU SUCK!!! the closest pick-apart is in NY an hour from me, and on my way down to NJ I saw like 5 or 6 u-pull-its' and a lot of junkers!!!!:bawling:

thats not normal.

thats not normal.

i was told it was? at least after 60k miles or so, the factory hubs will rattle when they are disengaged. at least thats what i was told, and for the last 35k miles that has been the case for me. they rattle in 2wd, and in 4wd they lock in and are totally quiet.

either way, new hubs are the only way to fix it. just gotta save up for those avm ones (i think they last longer)

Weird... Well, let me present you with an alternative option (Sorry for the threadjack, guys) I would just convert your stock PVH hubs to manual, those avms are nice ( i used to have a set but they got detonated do to my cv axle's snap-ring failing and that would cause the cv to fling around detonating the AVMs, not the AVMs fault), but this free mod works too and I have been running this and wheeling it for about 6 months now, and I'm not very nice to my truck.
Heres the link, I don't know if it will stop your rattling, but anybody can do it in under an hour and its free. It turns them into push button hubs. Maybe you will discover what is causing the rattling, If you need any internal parts to the stock hubs i have my old ones if you need anything.

actually, if they ever stop engaging all you have to do is jam a screwdriver through the mesh hole and push the piston in halfway. it will click to engaged. push it in all the way to disengage.

but i like the 40mph on the fly 4x4 engaging... it really helps when going from side streets to main roads in the winter.

i think ill just get the avm hubs eventually... ill try to post back with results. it might be a couple months though.

does it click all the time or just when cornering. our cj5 has lockers and when its in 2wd it clicks when we make sharp corners

no they click/clack all the time. well just on bumps, but yeah. it sounds like loose balljoints honestly, but theyve all been changed. when i bought the truck the guy told me they will make this noise soon enough, im surprised nobody here has heard of this problem. he said its just something inside that wears out a little and rattles, but has no effect on performance or anything.

i do notice they are noisier when its hot outside... and it does sound metallic, it might be plastic or nylon smacking around but i dont think so.

i wonder if its just because my 99 had the first revision of these vacuum hubs. maybe if i just slapped some hubs from an 01 on there it will stay quiet.
