HP = junk (electronics...)

Anyone else think so?

I've heard alot of people say it, and i bought one anyways. It was a laptop model dv9535, 17" screen, 256mb graphics card, pretty freakin sweet computer. About 9 months after i got it (not more than a month ago) the mother board went out. Luckily it was still covered under factory warranty, 3 weeks later i got it back and it worked normal again...for than a week. The mother****ing board went out again!!! :flipoff: I might get it back in a few weeks...whenever the hell the hp repair center gets to it.

I was happy with it up until the board fried the first time. I never had any problems with it, and it performed better than what i expected. Now i'm starting to wonder if this problem is going to keep up every month...and how long will it be after the warranty expires (less than 2 months) until it happens again. What should i do? Could i actually complain enough to get my money back? Or at least some of it?

What kinds of problems have some of you hp owners had? My dad has a home office, most of the hp products we've used were pretty good and reliable for the most part. A few exceptions here and there, but up until now hp was alright in my book. Now i wonder what kind of a lemon i have on my hands...:icon_confused:

I thought you were talking about HP as in high pinion. I was about to lay into you...lol.

I have had no problems in the past with HP, I know at work we only use Dell, and we switched from HP a few years ago...

I currently own a Gateway and after about 5 months or so the Hard Drive went out, had it replaced under warranty, no problems since(about a year)

Nothing is perfect...

I have had my hp laptop for just about a year and have had nothing but good luck with the thing, i love it.

I've had my DV9000 about a year and no major problems so far. About six months or so ago the plastic around the left hinge cracked out and now you have to be careful opening and closing it. I checked at Fry's (where it was purchased) about warrantying it and they said it would be $150 just for them to ship it out and have it looked at it, but it would probably be considered abuse. So I opted out of that.

Other than that no problems.

I'm posting this on my 4 year old ZD7K. It was a hotrod for it's time, though they had problems that HP didn't seem to want to admit.

It's board went at 35 months (ONE MONTH before the warranty ran out LMFAO), so HP replaced it and I bought one more year of warranty. No real probs so far (though the replacement board has an ATI video chipset, and I dont like the brand). I feel like I got my money's worth out of this $1775 (including warranty) laptop.

It's common practice to use refurbed parts in warranty work for a lot of tech stuff. There's NO way I'd buy a prebuilt PC without buying the 3yr warranty.

On my 3rd HP
desktop (1)
after 4 years overclocking my little celeron 667mhz the IDE controller died(my fault)

laptop(2)
plug worn out behind screen ductape fixed it(hp excuse was motherboard)(after 2 years of grabbing it by the top of the screen, droppinging it, etc,, still works to this day 3 years old, been dropped a ton of times, never failed me. hpze2100

laptop(3)
Compaq(hp built) f176us 5 or 6 months old, nothing wrong except vista, which im working on tweaking and peaking

Sorry about the confusion with the high pinion. I guess I should have been more specific with the title. :icon_thumby:

I just thought it was funny that even the guys at best buy's geek squad bashed hp as far as quality and most of all, design. One guy gave me a run through on how stupid they designed some of their laptops and how inaccessible they make half the things that need to be repaired.

But like I said, i've never really had any problems with hp, I just hope this motherboard thing isn't going to be a common problem that comes back to haunt me every few months...or weeks. I have less than two months left on the factory warranty, I sure hope the problem will be solved so I don't have to fix it once it's expired.

And another thing... When I bought it, less than a month later a newer model with better features came out that was about a hundred bucks less. That kinda ticked me off, but that's what you get when you buy electronics...:nopityA:

No doubt !! I was thinking the same.

I personally have never had an HP computer, but two of my roommates had HP labtops. I don't remember the model, but they were 17" wide screens with Intel processors and the 256Mb graphics card (Nvidia card if I remember correctly).

They sent their labtops in at least 4 times for one labtop and 6 or 8 times for the other one. Each time it was because the motherboard had overheated (even with coolers under them) and fried. Eventually HP replaced the Nvidia chipset with the other big graphics company (sorry do not remember the name) and it "fixed" the problem.

They got their warranties extended as part of their troubles but, have since switched to Alienware and not looked back.

The graphics card on mine is also nvidia. I hope they'll extend my warranty, because i believe it's going to keep happening. Sounds like i might be headed down the same road your roomates were down.

Haven't heard much about them, but I'd suggest check out the web for user groups if you have further problems...

What should i do? Could i actually complain enough to get my money back? Or at least some of it?

Having been on the inside of a large corporation dealing with these types of issues I'd say yes, you can actually get your money back...however, that requires first researching user groups...find out if there are problematic parts in the model you have (or similar models that use the same parts) and contact first the tech support to make sure they have a history on you and to follow up if you have further problems.

I'd say you probably experienced an exception (unless user groups say otherwise) rather than a normal fault with the mobo.

But even if you see hundreds of posts complaining, you're probably seeing only about 5 to 6% of the total production run. And a failure rate that low is actually acceptable and unless you do some really good complaining to the right people (talk to Customer Relations, not tech support) and have a long case history. Otherwise, you probably won't see any refunds.

Hope it works out for you on the second go-round...

I've been quite happy with mine, I bought mine nearly 6 years ago, and the only thing that went wrong was the fan died in the first 6 months. Since then it has worked fine for me, and its still a good computer. I am looking at getting a new one, but this one is still good for what I need it for, I really don't need a new one, but I'm waiting until I catch one on sale. Again, I think I'll go for another HP. My first computer was a Compaq, and all I can say was that it was about as useful as a computer as it would be as a boat anchor. I then bought a Dell, and that thing made my POS Compaq seem like the best computer ever made. Within a year I had a pile of repair receipts about an inch think, it was in for repair more of the time, then the time I actually used it. Then I got fed up and bought this HP, the fan died about 6 months into it, had that repaired under warranty, and its worked great ever since. I don't know the model but its black and silver and the screens getting to small.
