How's your lifted ranger on road.

Goin try to find some gears at the yard, I don't wanna buy new cause a v8 is comeing any time (soon as I find a decent 302 around here). I got a show that my club attends next mounth about 100 miles away and I want to drive this pile there.

Good luck finding anything more than 3.73's at the yard. You might as well buy both gear sets. And you might as well throw some traction in the rear diff while you are in there.

If the front isn't a D35 I would ditch it along with the 7.5 rear before I worried about adding traction or gearing.

Putting any extra money in a 7.5 with that big of a tire with a V8 in the works is a waste of $$ IMO...

I love how guys drop a bigger motor in or just think that because the engine has the power the gears or tranny can handle it. They stand between you and the ground lol. An electric motor it ain't, haven't you ever ridden a mountain bike?

I've got 4.10s and (heavy) 31s and I can't do 80 in 5th gear unloaded. 03 3.0 auto. I could before, idk why my poor 3.0 is so tired now.

Valid point but either way he is likely going to have to re-gear. If there are no explorer axles in his local yard, odds are slim that he's going to find a complete D35 and 8.8 with 4.10's already installed.

it's allready d35/8.8 Id say i'll mostlikey just be cruiseing at 50 up there. I'm in a very short time frame. Would the 4:11 be all right tho? Im goin try and find some if I can.

Will it be better than 3.73's? Yes.

Is it right? No.

If you are going through the motions to change it anyway, do it right in the beginning. IMO, you're wasting money otherwise.

I ran 35's and 3.73's for a while, with a 3.0 5spd. it really wasn't that bad at all... wasn't as good as it is now with 4.88's of course, but really was not bad at all. used 5th when I got to highway cruising speed. and btw, if you do the math with transmission gears and rear gears and tire size, I think it came out almost perfectly the same(or close enough) with 3.73, and 35's in 4th gear, as it did with 35's, 4.88's and in 5th gear.

1. One gear set difference you won't really notice. 3.73 to 4.10 is not a big step. I debated 4.10 to 4.56's for awhile and I'm glad Legoms talked me into 4.56's I know now that I would not have been happy with 4.10's. Plus 4.10 TTB gears are expensive and hard to find used.. So you almost have to get new ones. Expensive and they cost more than 4.56's in G2 gears. Doesn't make much sense I know.

2. I don't see how anyone can like 35's with 3.73's and a 3.0. There's no way I would say it wasn't that bad. I've drove a 96 ranger with 35's, 4.10's, and 4.0 and it sucked majorly. 5th was basically useless.

My opinion, if the math says 4.10 puts you back to "stock" with your tire size... Go 4.56's

well, lol, I own it and drove it for a while like that, and it truly wasn't bad... I could see where with an auto it would be absolutly terrible when you have no gear choice and are losing more power with an inefficient auto tranny and one or two less gears. I never had a problem ever cruising highway speeds unless it was a huge hill, which you will with any gears you have with a 3.0L. ive kind of noticed that everyone that says a 3.0L is absolutly terrible and has zero power always "drove one once" or "test drove my friends" or "read on the internet". they definitely don't have a crap ton of power or torque but they really are not that bad... especially compared to a ohv 4.0L. I've had one, and yes they have a lot more torque compared to a 3.0, but they are still a slug, just barely better than a 3.0L. on the highway accelerating from 50mph to 70mph you'd barely be able to tell the difference between the two.
