How will the M50D-R1 hold up?

ok so im gettin ready to put a m50D-R1 im my ranger with a 4.0 in front and 8.8 out back. my question is how strong are these trannies? has anyone used them off road in racing applications? any weak spots i need to look for? i would really rather run this tranny then run a built auto, too much to go wrong lol
 
It'll hold up alot better than your other "auto" option. lol

Yeah, the M5OD is a good tranny. Pretty solid. Watch the shift rail plugs. They like to leak. There is a fix in the Tech Library.

yeah the tranny i got already has the freeze plugs done.

well this is good to hear cause i wan this thing to last and do well in races
 
keep oil in it and they usually do allright. my 1st truck went over 200K with no issues.
 
well, yes of course. soybean oil will work well in your deepfryer but doesnt help your syncros last. lol. years ago in a jeep i changed out atf for gear oil in a manual trans. absolutly ruined it. M5OD and many other manual gearboxes spec A.T.F.

well i doubt ill get 200k out of it the way ill be using it but if i get a year or two out of it then ill be VERY happy lol
 
Actually the M50D-R1's shift and run much better with 0w30 gear oil. The ATF is absolutely too thin.

never heard of 0w30 gear oil, do you mean 30w engine oil? how many miles have you put on a m50d running 0w30? in it?
 
there is a oil out by pennzoil called syncromesh fluid, its a non-synthetic oil ment for manual transmissions, has gm and crysler spec #'s on the bottle, can get it at autozone. ive had it in my transmission since last november. its not a gear oil, resembles a light engine oil. i think i paid around 3-4 bucks a quart for it. been toying with trying it in the transfer case. its a electric shift unit, still works after 14 years.
 
oh i know what your talkin about, i had to run that in my old 2000 GMC with a 5 spd. For me ill probably be lookin into a semi-heavy high performace oil to keep keep tha tranny cool and well oiled during those 120 degree runs out in the desert.
