How well do these automatic transmissions hold up??

I'm in the market for a used ford ranger. It seems as though that all the rangers available in the area are automatics. I want a manual but they are seeming hard to find in good shape.

So my question is how long do these autos hold up? Things to look out for?

Out of the ones I've driven some seem to shift slightly hard. Not sure if thats normal, I haven't owned an auto in years and years. My last 5 vehicles have been a manual and I prefer them.

I want a 4cyl 5 speed but, there are a ton of v6 autos. I've heard the 3.0 is an amazing motor, and to get that one out of either of the V6s.

Help point me in the right direction.

I have a 3.0. Its a really tough motor but with an auto its pretty slow. Any of the motors offered in the ranger were great but definately try and find something with a 5spd, im kicking myself for buying an auto (not because it broke I would just MUCH rather have a manual).

the short answer is they don't. The upgrade for a Ranger automatic is a 5spd swap.

As long as you change the fluid regularly and keep them cool, they last a long time.

175k and no problems with my auto here. I'm not swapping until I have to, whats the point? THEN I'll go 5spd.

don't drive them hard. don't haha

Some hold up better then others... I've blown up a few 4R55Es so far, but I had an A4LD that wouldnt die. It never got the fluid changed, it saw full throttle launches EVERY time it moved, it chirped 2nd gear everytime it shifted, long smokey burnouts, neutral drops, etc and it lasted over 200K miles. That one just would die. :dunno:

my 5r55e has been good. Ive done 6K 1st gear climbs and burnouts, tons of shifting back and forth, and enough offroad use to blow it, but i have yet to have any issue.

This.

I'd strongly recommend adding a separate external cooler for it (rather than the one built into the radiator where the engine is actually heating up the tranny :no2: ).

Mine has 230K on the original tranny. Shifts decent, and I tow occasionally. It has been good to me thus far. But I change the fluids and make sure to not overheat it.
