Ok I bought a 89 ranger 2wd with 2.9 v6 with no transmission. I got a trans from a local junk yard and put it in. It wouldn't start at all couldn't even get the motor to turn over with socket on crank bolt. Took tranny back out and engine turns over fine with socket. Is there any way to tell if the tranny is bad while it is out or is there something I could have done putting it in that would make it do this? Thanks in advance!

Is this an automatic transmission, and if so, did you seat the torque converter with 3 "clunks" while installing? If you missed a clunk, then it's not seated all the way, and parts became jammed when you tightened the bolts to the engine block. You probably also damaged the torque converter.

yes it is automatic. not sure what you mean about seat the torque with 3 clunks? there was two guide pins to guide the trans on other than that I'm not clear on what you are talking about. how would I check this and what am I looking for?

The " torque converter " installs into the transmission. There will be 3 " clunks " as the convertor is twisted into and connects to the pump of the trans. It is common to miss and damage to the torque converter and/or the pump results. You may be lucky and no damage done. Check the converter closely and replace of needed.

Are these the 3 clunks we are talking about? inside the converter?

Yes.

You can see the two different splines that have to engage plus there is the two slots [or maybe flats] on the very outside [can't think of the proper term] where the splines are.

Yup, you turn the TC into the input shaft. It wil clunk. Turn some more, get another clunk. Turn again, get a clunk. The TC is seated. Drop the trans , inspect the TC, remove , and check around the input for cracks. On the Jeep Torqueflites of yore, not enough clunks would break the pump.

ok I got another tranny and TC incase the other ones got messed up, when I go to do the install any suggestions on how to make sure the TC is seated all the way? Last time I bolted the TC onto the flywheel then pushed the trans on. Any ways of doing it better?

Seat the torque convertor into the trans before installing the trans to motor. There is an access hole to put on the 4 nuts that hold the torque convertor to the flexplate after.

There is a complete service manual for the A4LD in the tech section of the website, which includes installation procedures. Make sure the TC is seated with the proper measured clearance in order to avoid crushing it.

Make sure you have the spacer plate installed
