Can someone tell me how to tell the difference in a 4r55e and a 5r55e while still in the truck ? where are the #'s located ?
The Mechanic thinks my 98 ranger has had the tranny changed from the 4r55e to the 5r55e.
He pulled a code that shows it is missing 5th gear.
overdrive light flashes and shifts hard from 1st to 2nd.
any input appreciated.

The 4R44E only comes behind 2.3 4cyl and 3.0 V6 engines. The 5R55E only comes behind the 4.0 V6.

What engine do you have?

we found the id tag on trans it is a 5r55e. the code on the door calls that trans so it has the correct one. the code says missing 5th gear. shifts hard from 1st to 2nd any ideas what the problem is thanks

Can be valvebody gasket, shift solenoids to name a few common problems. If its missing 5th, I've seen the OD sprag take a dump before too.

The reason its shifting hard is due to the code, the code puts the trans into high line pressure as a way to help prevent its self from failure. No 5th could be a fuse a wiring problem or solenoid or hard parts damage internally or as said in post above.
