how do you set the timing in a 2000 ford ranger with 3.0 l v6?

You don't. The PCM does.

Yup, the computer controls the timing curve to meet fuel needs at given temp, and humidity......... When you change your plugs or replace a sensor you should disconnect the battery (negative cable will do) and let it sit for a few minutes to reset the ECM/Computer.

You need either a chip or a tuner to change the timing. I've got an SCT tuner and I program the timing that I want on my home computer and load it into the SCT, then I take the tuner out to the truck ('00 Ranger) and flash the truck's PCM.
