Just had a quick question on how to prep/paint chrome rims to black ? I have What I believe to be chrome/chrome plated rims and would like to paint them black. My truck is all black with dark tint and I would like to paint the rims black. I do have an angle grinder, sand paper and figured if you sanded them down, primered, and flat coated in black spray paint it would do the trick but before taking on this task just wanted to know if there is anything else I should prepare for or do before tackling this task? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance !!

I just painted mine few months ago. Do your wheels have the chrome cover over black steels ? If so, here's what I did. Some has glue holding them and some has just snapped onto the wheel. Mine had glue so I used aircraft paint remover and a scraper. Afterwards I cleaned them with greased lightning and water. Next I used a brass wire cleaner on a power drill to completely strip everything off. After washing them again I let them dry for several hours. Next taped off the whole tire area before priming with ACE brand primer. After letting the primer dry for 24 hours I sprayed a coat of ACE Rust protector black. After letting it dry for several hours I sprayed another coat. Did this for every tire and came out great. Here's a pic of one tire.

My rims appear to be chrome currently. I'd like to paint them black to match the tint/ black color of the truck

Which style rims do you have ?

Your picture looks like what my lug covers are as chrome but I would love to have them all black as the rest of your rim is.

To do those I think others have just roughed up the surface and sprayed down an adhesive promoter before priming and painting.

Thanks for the advice.. I think I will scuff up the chrome to accept a coat of primer, then paint em.. As said my rims are really close to what yours were. That black on black looks sick also... Think Ill give it a go this weekend assuming I get paid.. haha.. Thanks for the advice.

PS> How long have you had yer rims painted and how is it holding up?

I've had them painted for.....2 1/2 months and so far holding up great. When I wash them I just use the car wash and no rim cleaner or degreaser. Now I have run them through an automatic car wash with the tire cleaner and had no problems from that.

On my old car I used to use DupliColor "High Heat" spray paint on my calipers/drums. Obviously, the wheels aren't going to get as hot, and I don't know what type of paint you plan to use. But if you're going to use regular spray paint anyway, I'd suggest using that.
