I did my valve cover gaskets, and realized the covers, valves, springs and everything else was covered in old oil deposits, I just purchased this 89 2.9 4x4 and it has a slight valve tap. I put Seafoam in the oil, but does anyone know of any better solutions to clean up this gunk

Look into Auot-Rx. I've never used it so I can't really tell you much.

My 84 ranger was same way I just cleaned the covers in gasoline and cleaned the heads best I could where I could reach and changed the oil(hot) poured a quart thru it before refilling it. I dont think much else to do without disassembling it other then seafoam and a few hundred miles on that seafoamed oil before changing it again. I plan on changing it again at 800 to 1000 miles.

Several low mile oilchanges is probably the best you can do without engine removal and dismantling for a good handson scrub.

I know Saab owners swear by auto-rx......the turbo Saab had a sludge problem......the treatment was to pull the VC and cleanup what you could get at.......then drop the oil pan and clean that and the screen up. Then you run the auto-rx in regular "Autozone brand" oil. you could skip the dropping pan step. http://www.auto-rx.com/ You also could read about it BITOG I owned a non turbo 98 Sabb 900. I used it in that a few years ago. I don't think I had a sludge issue but I was curious how it would work.......it seemed to help some....I cut the oil filter open.......I don't think I had much of an issue to begin with....ATF is also a very good cleaner.......some people run a quart of ATF in their engine for a few hundred miles before an oil change

ive heard of the trans fluid trick, but that swells seals past their limit and when they come back down they leak haha.

Just did a little reading and supposedly auto rx is a scam, anyone ever had success with it?

I've ran engines with a quart of ATF mixed with the oil for over 3000 miles. Never did any damage. Never caused any leaks to get worse.

When we get a really dirty engine in at work (Forklift technician), we'll drain the oil and refill it with diesel fuel, leave the old filter on. Run it about 10-15 minutes (idle, dont go driving it around). Then change the oil and filter while its hot. That usually does a good job of cleaning it up.

I don't disturb it if it's not warranted. The best would be to take as much out of the engine with out it getting into the engine.

Diesel oil. Diesels sludge and coke and dirty up something awful. As a result the diesel spec oils that a LOT more detergents in them, which between gas and diesel oils of the same viscosity is really the most notable difference. That and a few more additives that are good for our flat-tappet cams.
