hey im putting a 12inch jl audio sub in my truck with a kicker amp my aftermarket headunit has the female audio plugs. The only thing im not sure of is how do i turn the amp and sub off before the shut my truck off so it doesnt pull when i try to start it? i saw people install switchs what amp switch do you use for that?

thanks in advance

i would just put a switch in the blue remote wire or a switch to the battey to the amp..

when you start your truck the radio will shut off so if you use the remote lead from your aftermarket head unit it wont draw any power at all.

Auto antenna may work but if it has another remote wire some times called "sys control" use that, some head units only turn on the power antenna when the radio is on so your amps wouldnt get power when using the cd player.

Otherwise just install a switch coming from a switched power source, Ignition, remote wire etc... to the remote turn on for the amplifier.

Dont install a switch in the wire to the battery for the amp, most switches cant handle the current(amperage) an amp can pull. if you must do it this way check the Amperage rating on the toggle switch and compare it to the fuses on your amp. add the fuses on the amp up and thats what your toggle must be rated for. But i wouldnt do it this way at all.

can i splice into the power wire on the headunit? the one that only has power when truck is on

yup works exactly the same except your amps will still be on if the key is on and the radio off.

how do you normally do it so the amp is off if the headunit is off cuz thats what i want

I don't see why not. It shouldn't draw muck power.

your headunit should have a wire out the back designated for hooking the amp signal wire to.

^^^This, it should be either solid blue or blue with a white tracer (usually)

when i first got my sub in my truck what i did is i put a wire in the power wire and then run that wire to the switch then another wire to the system control. that way i could turn off the amp and sub when i wanted to. only problem is i would forget. now that i have an after market stereo i got a wire running to the system control from the amp to the system control of the stereo

Question? Your hu wiring harness has a remote wire for turning the amp on and off. Why do you want a switch. You said to keep it off? Your amps don't draw that much away from the battary. And most of the time the hu shuts off momental as you start your truck. I'm missing the need for a switch.

i wanted a way to turn my sub off when my headunit is off even if the truck is on and i dont want the amp to pull when the trucks starting

That's what the signal wire does. It will only turn on your amp when the head unit is playing music.
