hey everyone im about to unbolt the 4.0 from the swap truck and im not sure what all i should pull. Im looking for the easiest way to get the motor out. i thought about taking the motor and trans out together but im not sure how to get to all the bolts on transfer case.
this is my first time doing any real work like this any help is good

take a look at my build thread. its not a 4.0, but the same stuff applies. i took engine/trans/t-case all out as a unit on my 84 BII. taking the core support and inner fenders off was a lot easier than i thought.

i had trouble getting one of the trans bolts at the top passenger side on my 4.0 swap. it was just too close to the fire wall and couldn't get much turn on that bolt. otherwise i was able to get all 7 other trans bolts out fairly well with extensions from below the truck. that 8th one ended up being creative usage of 6pt versus 12pt tools. i left the trans and transfer case with the truck. i pulled the fan shroud, fan, and that was about it when i yanked the motor. just take your time and im sure others will chime in with suggestions about motor, trans, xfer case combos.

I've pulled the engine and tranny out together but without a body lift I wouldn't recommend it.Another tool you can use to get to those top bolts is tilt the engine once it's unbolted.Once the engine mounts are unbolted put a jack under the front of the engine to tilt it more.As you move this whole thing around make sure your not in a position for something like the motor to shift and smash you.
