How to limit slip in differential

On snow and ice, i found that my diff slip ( one wheel spining) too much when i accelerate, how can i prevent my diff from doing that ?, i dont have the best winter tire but they are news. i dont want to change my diff, or weld them to block them completely, i want to to still be able to make sharp turn smoothly. :cool:

When i was young i used to play with rc nitromethane cars and we putted thicker or lighter oil in diffs to limit or increase the slip when we were accelerating out of corners, or braking in corners, that worked pretty well. even in 4wd category, some add central differential, and with the right tuning we could make the rc cars driving abillity close to like a full size AWD could do.

Now what i want to know, it's if those principes are applicable to full size cars, anybody heard of that, or did that ?
 
It doesn't scale up so well. Too much stress on the bearings. If you play with the oil weight too much in either direction you will chew up the bearings.

Swapping in a limited slip rear is your best option. Better tires will help a lot though.

For getting unstuck from a parking spot though, setting the parking brake part way will add resistance to the side that is slipping and help the other side gain some traction.
 
Run 2 gallons of 300,000wt RC diff fluid. Be about the same $$ as a locker.

what brand or type would you recommend or prefer, or use ?,

Today i loaded my sled in the trunk, it helped a lot for traction XD ;
 
Add weight.

A diff is like no child left behind. No child can get ahead. It sees which wheel has the lesser amount of torque going to it and then limits the other one to the same amount. One wheel on dry and one on ice--both get an F for traction. You pile enough weight in the bed, you'll get moving.
 
Summit sells limited slip carriers for Ford 7.5 rears. They list them as being for a Mustang, but they work in our trucks as well. Then you just need the spiders, clutches, and wave spring.
 
IMO, if you want to go cheap, swap in a junk yard 8.8 limited slip, probably be cheaper than buying a set of internals to make a l/s 7.5

will work quite well too...
 
did anybody ever tried this theory on a full size cars ?
 
swapping gear fluid? yes, lots of engineers charged with designing differentials and developing optimum fluids for extended range use...

simple difference, rc cars do not go hundreds of thousands of miles at speeds, and with forces that without PROPER lubrication and cooling will cause metal to melt

though at the risk of sounding like a douche, if you feel that we may not be correct, please feel free to give it a shot and let us know the outcome. if you are right and we are wrong, i will be the first one to admit my mistake and give you praise for finding this solution

fwiw, if you want to go with thicker fluid than what is in your axle, not sure what is in the 7.5, but i know in my rear axle it's synthetic 75-w140, one step thicker for a readily available oil would be bearing grease
 
Noob question . What would be a good donor for an 8,8 3.27( I think) Low 3s LSD?
 
explorer or mustang... though most (or all) fox mustangs are coil spring, and most explorers are sprung under, so they will both probably have to have new perches put on

fox mustangs came with 2.73, 3.08, 3.xx 3.73 and 4.10 i forget the middle ratio... the 3.08 and 3.73 are the most common though... and IIRC, all the fox 8.8's are l/s
