How not to back a trailer

I'm sitting at home, minding my own business, when I hear a whole lot of air brakes and beeping outside for a long, long time. I finaly get curious enough to investigate, there is a dump truck literally two inches from my truck with a dump trailer hooked up, trying to make a u-turn in our parking lot.

These clowns had been at this for at least the last five minutes to get the truck stuck where it was. The rear of the trailer is AGAINST a large tree and pushing it towards the other building with a hell of a lot of force, the whole contraption is jacknifed all to hell and back, and the tires are slipping, trying to keep going.

One idiot is driving, two idiots are spotting, nobody is watching my truck. So I keep right on standing there, watching, writing down the phone number written on the side of the door.

They finally gave up on trying to shove a trailer through a tree, so they pulled forward, barely missing my truck, and decided to pull in next to the dumpster, swing the trailer into a little branch of parking spaces, and see where that would get them.

They hit the dumpster five different times.

They hit another (smaller) tree and actually managed to knock it down.

They got up on the curb and spun the tires in the grass long enough to throw mud about ten feet in all directions and coat the dumpster.

They still didn't get turned around.

So the next plan, shove the trailer up onto the curb and THEN back the truck onto the curb and turn around.

Success! But then they all piled into the cab to take off and the driver let the truck roll backwards too much and clobbered the fence between our property and the next.

They drove away.

I called their boss and my management.

Don't let this happen to you!
 
they evidently missed the "how to back-up trailer" class. turn your steering wheel the OPPOSITE WAY that you want trailer to go, IE; if you want trailer to go left, turn wheel right
 
Hmm, when I got my CDL in WY, I had to show I could back a trailer, for like an hour! The road test had more backing than going forward... I wonder where these idiots got their license...

It's really not that hard, you just gotta think about it....

I was driving my grandpas dumptruck and a heavy duty trailer with a 950 Loader, AND excavator!!, I backed that up several times, unhooked the trailer, dumped loads, then got out of the dumptruck, drove the excavator off the trailer to get the loader off, put the excavator back on, filled up the dump with the loader, put the loader back on the trailer and went and dumped that load a few kilometres away,




WHEN I WAS 11!!, (and yea, i could barely reach the pedles :icon_thumby:)

Well not always, there's a good chance it was a transfer dump with 2 joints instead of one, making it so you steer the same way but is still much more difficult than backing up a trailer with one joint.
 
Yea, it's always interesting to watch idiots trying to back up a trailer. First couple times I've hauled a trailer I had a lil trouble getting it moved around, then I got used to it. Now the only time I have difficulty with backing up something towed behind me is when I try to pull a jackhammer compressor behind a F-350 dump... you only see the compressor when it jackknifes... Thus why when I have to fetch one of those, I typically try to take my Ranger since it makes it way easier to see where I'm goin in reverse.

Actually, just last week I made some lady nervous I guess... I was in a tiny lil parking lot with my Ranger that had an enclosed motorcycle trailer hooked to it. Took a bit of care, and finally hopping my one front tire over the curb (I tried first to do without, but after two tries it was very plain it just wasn't going to happen, only made the two tries cuz I really kinda didn't want to get my nice tires muddy, lol). Once I hopped the one tire over the curb to get the right angle, I slid the trailer right in between her SUV and a car, perfectly aligned within the boundaries of the parking space I picked. This was all after I watched someone try to perform the same feat I did, although they had two spotters... and took at least 5x as long to get their trailer in a much bigger slot (they picked a handicap spot). Sad.

I've actually found that often "spotters" can be a hindrance rather than a help when it comes to backing up a trailer. It seems most people don't know how to be effective at it, or at least from what I've seen.

I think the OP should have videotaped the entire thing (or at least the part he saw).
