Sorry if this is an old, covered topic, but not sure where or how to check.

Back in the early 80's I converted a Datsun pickup to 4X4 and I later dropped in a 307 Chevy V-8. Had to cut the firewall and the truck was so nose-heavy I was afraid to drive it off-road or without the camper shell.

I just inherited my father-in-laws 90 Ranger XLT 4X4 with the 4.0L V-6. I was wondering about just building the 4L or putting in a V-8. I've got a bad back from too many years of racing MX and Dez, so my off road will be more cow trailing, so just want a "Fun" motor.

Just wondering what motor to put in or should I just build the 4L? If doing a V-8 conversion is better, what all is involved? Is the Ford 302 a light motor or would I have the same problems as with the 307 in the Datsun?

Just trying to get ideas, so any help is great. I'm a dreamer, so just trying to dream about what I want to do in the future.

Thanks to all in advance.

There is work involved, but very little fabrication. The heater-A/C box has to be clearanced for the V8 Valve covers, mounts have to be changed. In some cases the transmission crossmember has to be moved a few inches. And the hardest part is choosing a radiator to fit, then in some cases fab work to fit what you chose. Weightwise, the 302 isn't much different from the V6. Add aluminum heads, intake and waterpump and I doubt there's 25 lbs difference. You'll also have to replace the V6's transmission too.

I'm currently doing a V8 swaP into my 1983 Ranger. At the end it will probably taken approx. 150 Hours of work. But it's can be more or less depnding on what you want. For the ride height my 83 has originaly a 4 banger, ive keep th stock suspension and it don't sit very much lower with the V8.

So it definitely sounds like it's easier than my Chevy into a Datsun swap. Sounds like something I should look into more. Hummm! NEW TOY, NEW TOY.......NO MONEY! But if I save all my empty's.
Thanks for the info.

It's not a bad job to do. I've done a few and it can be done with factory parts and an oil filter relocation kit. When I converted my 85 RAnger to a V8 the nose dropped 1.5". I replaced the front springs with Mazda B3000 springs and now it sits at factory height. Be prepared to run into a few snags (lower rad hose springs to mind here LOL). Start with a good solid foundation, fix the rust and do the basic stuff and you'll have a good truck to play with.
