I'm installing Infinity Reference's soon but I was wondering if an amp would make a major difference. Someone told me it is better to have the amp with the low resistance Infinity's. The speakers say they match up with the 4 ohm resistance, but should I still be worried?

Basically...

1)How much will an amp help in general?

2)Do you all recommend an amp if I'm using the reference's?

Thanks

Yes the amp will make your speakers sound the way they were meant to sound. Your head unit will only put out around 10-12 watts of clean power. Your speakers need at least 60 watts. What model number reference's are you using?

You will blow a speaker faster by underpowering it than overpowering it.

2amp or not 2amp

ever crank up your radio/head unit and it reaches its limit at 3/4 volume?

with an amp your volume will never reach that position, unless you really want to introduce static into your speakers.

id get some bassblockers.

well said :)

do you have an after market HU, that will produce a cleaner signal, and allow amping to go smother.

but amping will help, like said above it will give a proper amount of watts needed for correct operation,

with an amp your volume will never reach that position

this is not 100% correct, when you amp something you need to make sure you have your set up right or you can introduce clipping and thats the fastest way to blow a speaker/sub.

one of the biggest misconceptions about powering drivers. there are many ways to turn a driver into a paperweight and underpowering it is not one of them.

Well, I have the infinity 6822cf speakers ready. I am using a Sony Xplod CDX-GT330.

But I am thinking of just waiting a little while to get an amp, this way I can do all the install stuff at the same time.

If you are underpowering it and it is clipping it will become a paperweight real quick.

but thats not a result of underpowering the driver. thats because some dumbass a)doesnt know how to set the gains b) boosts the shit out of the signal by using bass boost and the LOUD features on the deck

true but usually when someone underpowers a speaker they feel they have to turn the gain all the way up to get the volume they want. Plus most amateurs also think if they turn the gain all the way up it will be the loudest. They dont know about clipping.

I am not trying to argue with you. We are meaning the same thing i am just wording it differently. You are right an experienced installer can install something that is underpowered and it still sound good and not hurt anything with the gain levels set right. I was talking more for the amateurs that don't know much and just thinks turn it all the way up, it will sound good.

if you use a low end head unit with low outs, and run it to an amp that has a clipping light you can adjust the amp gain so the light never comes on. if that is what you are eluding to.
what i am saying is with an amp you can keep your volume dial down lower so that you dont introduce distortion into your amp/speakers, nothing is worse than clipping at 40 watts.

2 things to remember:
400 watt @ 4 ohm is not the same as 400 watt @ 2 ohm.
Matching the RMS wattage is more important than the peak wattage, unless you're into SPL competitions... and going deaf.

typically anything less than 4ohms you should use a high current amp.
it does not make a difference if you use rms (~75% of peak) or continuous/peak.
as long as if you stick with one or the other when buying your gear.
