I painted my ranger with a roller and 2 gallons one red and one black. I used a sharpie to fill in the lines I was to drunk to see.....

I could just get a can of por15 …. Then the tailgate would still be good 100 years after the rest of the truck rusts away

- Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Plan for it as best you can.
It depends on the paint. If it's a solid color, it will take less cans than a metallic paint. From what I remember it took about 12 cans to do a Ranger tailgate that was a solid color. The windshield visor on my 2011 took about 20 to get the finish and color right (metallic paint).
Make sure you use the rest of the chemicals to prepare the metal. I have seen it go bad if the instructions were not followed to the T....
