How much fuel does idleing use?

fastpaker,

📌Good catch🎉🎉, I wrote that backwards🎉🎉

1 hour at idle equivalent to 20 minutes at highway speeds. Also, just a rule of thumb.

My trucks run for days sometimes.

My 2.9 ate about 1/3 tank per day in winter ..4 to 5 gallons.

So .15 to .2 gph is what I guessed.

I don't care for auto stop/start but I can tolerate it, as long as I can disable it when I want
It wasn't ever added for fuel savings

It was to meet idle emissions testing

$100 for the starter and $400 to install, so the 5 years works, lol
So its even money as long as gas prices stay the same, but that's not likely, gas will go up, and faster than the price of starter motors, lol

I turn it off in heavy traffic where the idiots in front of you need to move that 1/2 car length at a time
And at stop lights..............where the heck does that 1/2 car length come from, and some times repeatedly
The lights red, the length of vehicles stays the same, where the heck does that pull forward 1/2 a car length come from?
There can't be that many people out there with bad depth perception, can there?
Yes. Yes there can.

Because of the way I stop, auto start stop often doesn't engage even when I just leave it alone. Maybe I'm supposed to wait longer and brake harder? I don't know. So, I just don't bother to disengage it.

My brakes last a long time. Around 6 years on average for the front. The rear ones depend on the frequency of deployments and the weather while the truck sits. At least since having truck with rear disc brakes. The previous vehicles with drum brakes tended to last at least a decade, usually more before they needed changed. The 2011 is on it's 3rd set of rear pads and rotors since brand new. But I'm digressing.

The auto start stop rarely engages for me. So, I just let it be. Other's experiences may vary.

Auto stop/start is brake pedal activated, so unless your foot stays on the brake pedal it won't stop the engine

So if you are one of those horrible people that constantly stop short and then creep forward until light changes then no auto stop, one of those 1/2 car length "creeps", lol

No, the creeping thing people do drives me nuts. It's not going to make the light change sooner. STOP IT!

I do slightly lift my foot just before a full shop to smooth out the stop. That might be enough to disengage the auto start/stop. 🤷‍♂️

yes it is, I've played with it some on rental cars before, if you let off the brake enough that it just doesn't roll it will not shut the engine off most of the time...

Most auto stop/start vehicles that I've seen will not engage the function unless you are over 5-10 mph when you start braking, so if you brake to below that speed, release the pedal and then come to a full stop, it will not trigger it. I do that most of the time anyway for the same reason @sgtsandman gave. I'm pretty sure the new Rangers they turn the system off when you are in Sport mode as well. They also won't trigger until the engine has reached operating temperature. I'm not a fan of the system, especially on our work trucks. Luckily, my BMW allows you to turn it off and it doesn't default back to on the next time you crank it like most others do.

The numbers the EPA quotes is the start/stop feature will save you a tank of gas a year in normal driving; Ranger gas tank is 68 liters, regular it $1.399/liter = $95. Starter from Tasca Ford is $97.90. Ford warranty covers starter for 5 years, so they expect them to last at least that long (given Ford want >99% to make it to end of warrantee, it should be failing the day after). So, by EPA numbers, I'm at least $250 ahead ahead (OK, I do my own repairs, so I don't count that shop costs, but the average individual should at least break even).

You can dispute the EPA numbers, but those are what bean counters/engineers are working from when they developed the system.
The starter is not part of the powertrain so it's covered for 3/36 and not 5 years. Your gas is expensive, is it diluted with alcohol like ours or are your politicians smarter than ours?

Politicians are greedier.

You should ask @RonD about price of gas in his area.

Why in the name of the Lord would you presume intelligence?
I wouldn't. A Dartmouth professor once called and chewed me out because his new Explorer was leaking oil all over the garage floor. We had it towed in and found his "new" Explorer was 3 years old and the original oil filter had rusted through. He was offended that no one told him the oil needed to be changed. He was in his 60's and I'm pretty sure he'd owned cars before. Another one chewed me out saying we'd screwed something up on Saturday when we worked on his car. We hadn't been open Saturdays since 1984. He swore we'd worked on his Ford Nissan. He had a Focus years before and had traded for a Nissan, but managed to forget by Monday morning where he had been on Saturday. Explain again, please, the value of a liberal arts education.

Good thing these are the people that will be the first to give a 3 hour dissertation on the virtues of Marxism.

But hey.... Good thing the uneducated useless eaters who can actually fix things and keep fortunate 500 companies equipment moving are the problem.... am I right!!! 😆

Those guys vote.

Just sayin.

here's a video where they measured idle-ing fuel usage, specifically related to the auto-stop start stuff. but still interesting info

Ignorance is not having the specific knowledge requested, so being ignorant is NOT an insult if you never had the knowledge

Stupid is not being able to apply the knowledge you do have

An intellectual has knowledge in specific areas, and they are usually STUPID, because they can not apply that knowledge outside its framework

Smart is not book learning, never has been, smart is being able to apply the knowledge you have to solve new problems in new situations, and then learn from that to apply it to the next new thing

"Think outside the BOX" is often used, the BOX is what you already know, an intellectual is trapped inside their BOX
A smart person can take whats inside their BOX and apply it to something new that's outside their BOX, making their BOX bigger :)

Who ever dies with the biggest BOX wins, lol
