probably not the right section for this, but i'm posting it anyways...

for the last like 4-5 years, i've had a mini keg at the foot of my bed, every day i toss my spare change in it, the slit in the top is just big enough to get all sorts of coins into it, and too small to get any back out, there is also no access, so i can't steal the good coins and leave the small value...

right now it's about half full, somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-2.5 Liters of change, it's VERY heavy, i would say probably 20-30lbs, though i don't have a scale to check it with... i'm curious if anyone has collected money before, and seen any comparison/ remembered any co-relation between physical volume or weight, to average $ value

of course the amount of 1 person's 20oz of change will vary from another's... i'm just trying to figure a decent average...

in canada, we also have 1$ and 2$ coins, of which there are a lot of, which will boost the value of the keg greatly...

anyone have any weight/volume statistics to loose change and then how much it was worth once they cashed it in? or even how many coins are in a pound or something like that?

i should also add, i have tossed a few bills in too, so it should hopefully be a lot of money...

i'm interested in numbers be it canadian change or american... our quarters and smaller denominations are the same size, and roughly the same weight as yours, i can skew the data slightly after calculating the cost, if i only have american figures

I have a 1L tequila bottle I put all my change in. I normally empty it when it is about half full. Normally about $50-75 USD. Seems like 1/3 of the bottle is always pennies though.

Don't have weight/value scales that would help because it would be thrown off simply by the denominations...take it to a Sobey's if you've got one around you and use their coin counters...but only if you want to cash them in...

Or, do what some people have done and make your next loan payment with them at the bank...

I dont know how well a calculation would work to figure it out... You would have to make assumptions of how much of each denomination you put in, first off. Sounds complicated as F***...

My scale tells me four different pennies weight 2.29g, 2.38g, 2.51g, and 3.11g. The last was an american, and the lightest was newest, so it probably contains a higher zinc content, so the changes in weight are explainable, I still dont see there being anywhere near an accurate calculation. Especially once you factor in loonies and toonies. One toonie is over 7 grams, but 200 pennies is nearly 500 grams.

And then you add bills to the equation? lol
I think your sawzall is the only way to get an estimate that has less than a 50% margin of error...

Well, I can tell you that when I was 10 ish (15 years ago) I had a tin "building" (actually looked like a building) full of change that I had saved up or that my parents had thrown in there, etc. I cashed it all in and was able to buy a GameBoy, which were running about $50 and had a little left over. It was mostly small denomination coins too. Pennies and nickles mostly.

ok, so i'm looking at 50-75$ per 500ml, so roughly 100-150 per liter, not taking loonies and toonies into consideration... i figure i'm probably 1/3-1/2 loonies and toonies... so lets just say, i've got 2L for arguement's sake, lets say there's equal numbers of nickles, dimes, quarters and pennies, the mean value of the coins would be $0.1025 or 10.25 cents so in say, $125 (average between the values you gave me) we are looking at 1220 coins so lets say for arguments sake lets use 1/3 loonies and toonies, who's mean value are 1.5

406.5 coins worth over .25, so that's 609$ plus the value of the remaining shrapnel which is 814 coins, times the $0.1025 each is $83.43 total, plus the 609 from the large coins, i'm looking at $692.43 for the 2L not taking into consideration the fact that i have bills in there, and there are significantly more quarters than there are pennies or nickles...

if i calculate for 50% 1$+ coins, i'm looking at $915+$62.52=$977.52 total...

speaking with a panhandler who i was sitting with (long story as to why) he was saying if you hold your hands out, and fill it with as much coins as you can, without dropping it, it usually works out to between 50 and 100$ but that's also what people give to panhandlers... people don't often give them pennies...

and to answer your question, yes we have a sobeys, but they don't have a coin counter... i found out you can take your change to the casinos here, if you go to the slot counter, they will give you a basket and run your money through, without charging you a fee at all, though it would be best to put a portion of it into gambling to say thanks... so if i pickup a grand or more, i'll drop $100 at a 3 card poker table

Hmmm...good savings plan...

But my other suggestion would be to buy 5 lotto maxx tickets and send me a million when you win the $43,000,000 this week...that is, of course, if what's his name from Sudbury doesn't buy a ticket (that I suggested to do)...

Maybe if I just buy one for myself and win I will toss you a couple of jars of toonies...really big F'n jars, mind you...

i like you buying the ticket better :D lol i would love you long time if you flip me some big ass jars of toonies! lol

is it bad that firefox thinks our currency (toonies) is spelled wrong?

Terry, thanks for the link, that will give me a much better estimate as to how many coins i have in the can, provided there are roughly equal numbers of all the coins... then multiply the value of the average coin, by the estimated total number of coins...

I had a water cooler jug filled about 1/3 of the way and cashed in about well over 300 bucks at the Coinstar once. :icon_bounceblue:

i'm going to have to cash this in, at the beginning of may, as i'll be heading (hopefully) to tacoma wa to see RAMMSTEIN LIVE!!!!!!!

might top seeing KoRn and 5 finger deathpunch

ok, based on the stats that terry posted there, i've got these statistics (provided quantity of coins is all even) the average coin is 4.5961g/ and is worth $0.568333 so my next step is find a scale to weigh my keg

Well, I'd hate to feel like I was buying love...lol

Is it firefox that does that spell checking? It goes ape-poop when I spell favourite, flavour, labour, or anything with a U in it...

Funny, things just don't seem right without you...:icon_rofl: and I was trying to figure out a pickup line along those lines...hmmmm...

i do the exact same thing, i'm going to go with american vs canadian dictionary... i still spell it colour and FF hates that too

along with my lack of capitals... i'm, american, and canadian are all spelled wrong
