So i have a 2004 FX4 (not level II) and want to know how many spline my 8.8 is. I have read a mix of "level II's and explorers are 31 spline, all other rangers are 28" and "FX4's and explorers are 31 while all other rangers are 28". I just want to know if both the FX4 and FX4 Level II are 31 or only the Level II.

In 2002, the "FX4" had a 31 spline while the "Off-Road" package and down had 28 splines. In 2003, the "Off-Road" package became the "FX4 Level I" and had a 28 spline with the clutch type LS (Trac-Loc?). The "FX4 Level II" had the 31 spline with the Torsen LS. Your 2004 FX4 Level I has a 28 spline with clutch type LS. For 2008, I think they are back to only one level of the FX4 with the Torsen LS as an option. I would think that the Torsen LS option would upgrade you to a 31 spline, but I'm not sure. If you want the upgrade, the easiest way is to find a wrecked Level II, as it's a direct bolt in. (Good luck with that...)

A quick way to tell is to look at the axle tubes. If they taper down just outboard of the spring perches, it's a 28 spline. The 31 spline had larger axle bearings.

Explorer's had a 31 spline up until they went to IRS in the rear. Not sure of the year it switched. Also, I don't know if the IRS rear is still a 31 spline either...

Is the level II axle the same thing as an explorer axle except its 2 inches narrower? I herd the explorers have a higher weight rating b/c of larger axle shaft bearings, are the level II equipt wiht the larger bearings too?

Ok so i think i have the 28 spline then. i looked and it does taper down after the spring perches. thanks kurgford!

Yep, only the "level II" (and 2002-only FX4) have the 31 spline axle.

Explorer and 31-spl FX4 axles have the same size tubes & bearings, but I believe the shafts lengths are different (should be ½" longer on the Ex). IRS Explorer is still 31 spline.

And 2008 FX4 is 31 spline Torsen diff.
