how many mpg's does your 2.9 get?

Harness should be on the passenger side fender well, if I'm remembering correctly. When you set the timing, did you unplug the SpOut connector? If not, go back and unplug the connector then set base timing to 10-12 degrees BTDC (with the engine warmed up).
I will look again for the plug. I did not pull the spout connector. By pulling the spout, can you add in timing or does the computer adjust the timing?
Thanks, Jeff

The plug is actually two plugs.. It should be inside a box so to speak to protect it. You will have to unplug it from the said box. Usually mounted near or next to the main fusebox.

The SPOUT connector is what tells the computer it can set the timing. When it is unplugged it reverts back to base timing..whatever that may be. This is when you need to set the timing. Once you reinstall the plug into the connector, the computer takes over.

So you really can't add in timing like in the "old days" by twisting the distributor.
All you can do is mess up the base timing and give the computer fits, right?

By changing the base timing, you are adding or subtracting to what the computer sets. That really hasn't changed.

Just made a 1,200 mile road trip from fl to ny averaged 20mpg with the truck fully loaded and running a/c and/or windows down. I just got the truck so i haven't had a chance too figure out street driving mpg's yet.

I have not re-geared the speedo yet. It reads about 5 MPH slow on the freeway. I have not tried to pull any codes yet, and that brings a question. I can not find the plug on the harness to plug the ODBI reader into. I could also not find anything to do a test light test on. The timing is set about 2 degrees less than "ping" with regular gas.
You'll be in the ballpark once you properly set the timing. Then you need to recalc your MPG with the 5 mph slow registering speedo. If your speedo reads 55 and you are actually going 60 mph you know what percent miles to add back in for true miles travelled. After you reset the timing, run a tank through and recalculate mpg but add in the unpegged miles. Your true mpg is probably closer to 18, if not better. Oversized tires (extra weight & surface resistance) will account for at least one or two mpg depending on city or highway driving. Report back your mpg once you straighten out the timing.

1987 HighRider STX
2.9 with a slight cam
5 speed
31/10.5R15
4.56 gears with lockrite in rear
custom exhaust - stock manifolds, hollowed out rear half of cat, pipe exits infront of rear tire w/o a muffler.

16 city and 20 on highway using 87 octane.

not to bad since i allways romp on it.

My gas mileage is very consistent no matter what I do. If I go 200 miles I'll take 10.5-10.7 gallons of gas. If I go 240 miles I'll take 240.5-240.7 gallons of gas. It's basically 20 mpg, less .5 to .7 gallons of gas.

89 Super-cab with 145k miles. Very stock.

I did have the injectors pulled and cleaned about 30k miles ago. That improved the mileage about 2 mpg. They were apparently pretty bad because it was causing bucking and periodic rough and high idle.

Depending on how heavily my B2 was modified, I got anywhere from 14.5 to 23 MPG with my 2.9.

90' xlt 302,XXX miles

auto, k&n drop in filter, msd blaster coil, autolite xp plugs, bigger throttle body, magna flow cats and shortened cat back 2.25".

22 average here, with 16inch wheels 5speed, has a glasspack, and a bigger throttle body, I treat it like a racecar, chearps second, and when I get lucky even third,
I run 10-30 valvoline with motorcraft filters, and k@n nock off air filter
22 in on 87 octang,
on shells 93 I get 23.5 to 24 betting the hell out of it, to prove it it's on it's third motor, and I have had it 2 years

88 2WD short bed all stock 2.9 and 5 spd with an 8.8 R/E and 3.55 gears. We run Rotella T 15-40 and I get 19.5 MPG's. 2500 miles ago the engine was freshened up (re-ring and bearing kit) and really needs a good tune-up. Truck has 145,xxx miles on it and has 225/70/14 front and back. I got the truck for $300 and put about $400 in it, it runs good but now has developed a hard start. Good truck though.
