How many miles on your 4.0?

just turned 199,000 still runs good

94 Ranger I repo'ed from my Stepson with 189,000 miles. Smokes like my mother in-law (upto 2qts per fillup). Lifters rattle louder than my Powerstroke. Pulling engine next weekend for a swap with engine out of wrecked 92 Explorer with 84K on it.

For those of you with high mileage Rangers considering a rebuild you might check here:

Good engines with low relative miles at excellent pricing. If you are in the mid-west you could drive to pick it up. They are near Sioux Falls.

For example, there was a 4.0L w/41,700miles for $850, $200 for shipping.

Personally, I'd have to think hard before rebuilding an engine w/250,000 miles in order to save $200-$300 (or less) when a low-mile engine was available for a $1,000. Just saying....

almost 140,xxx miles. im currently changing my tourqe converter for the second time. this is my first time changing it since iv had it. i got it from my grandfather which then it was used to pull a 4000lb tar trailer so it was always a stress on the tranny. but engine runs like a champ.

A 95 ranger 2wd came in to my local salvage yard last year with 352,000 on it.It still ran good but had the typical rocker/valvetrain noise. The frame was toast which is why it was salvaged.

199k miles on my '93. Still gets 20mpg @75 mph and 24mpg @ 60 mph or less on interstate. At 165k I pulled an overload u-haul (truck was loaded also and had to turn the 3" drop hitch over to keep the trailer tongue from dragging). Set the cruise at 60 and got 20 mpg from Florida to Ohio. Only dropped to 19 when I went through the mountains. Truck pulled the u-haul like it wasn't there. People couldn't understand why I didn't want to trade it in during the cash for clunkers.

Cost of repairs to date: < $700 Truck was a gift to me from my parents when it was 10 yrs old. :icon_thumby:

195k on my 99 4.0.

replaced the tranny at 185k (the reverse band snapped. i regularly would let the truck roll backward while throwing it into drive. it works on these trannys because the reverse band serves as sort of a clutch, but its not good for it. best to stop fully before putting it in drive again. otherwise the tranny would have still been working perfect).

ive also replaced the normal things like balljoints, exhaust and one wheel bearing. otherwise, surprisingly, basically no work on the motor at all- just spark plugs, wires and serpentine belts a couple times..... and about 3 batteries (i run a lot of electronics that tend to malfunction and drain the battery flat a lot).

the damn thing still runs like its new (and because i keep up on the balljoints, it also rides like new) im really shocked how well it still runs, and that everything still works (electric door lock actuators are too weak to be useable anymore, but those only cost $30 a side). i always thought this truck would really start falling apart around 200k, but honestly it seems like its just broken in. the motor shows ZERO signs of upcoming trouble, no oil leaks anywhere, no consuming oil even if i go 5k miles between changes.

i guess the only real part that doesnt work right is the tachometer. that might just be a bad connection though, as it works on and off constantly while im driving, sometimes only shows 1krpm or so when its really 2krpm... band your hand on the dash and it pops back up to normal for a bit.

i think a big reason its stayed as good as it has is because of regular up-keep. replace your balljoints and stuff when they first go bad, because having those loose and shaking around causes other things on the truck to go bad prematurely.

as far as the motor, replace the sensors when they go bad and use good oil. also fuel system cleaners every oil change helps a lot too. and also, suck out your power steering resivior and refill with fresh fluid every oil change! (new trick i learned from here. its more important then it seems).

the 4.0 rangers have awesome torque. i really dont know what it is, but i can haul 9 sheets of 1/2" drywall and its not even as much of a drag as the air conditioner is. and even with that load, i can run the a/c on max and still accelerate just fine.

269,573 on my 94 4.0 4x4. no major work on motor, just alt, plugs, wires, thermostat etc. replaced tranny couple clutches. have vacume leaks at lower intake manifold. oil from pan and rear main but nothing serious. Badly need suspension work, body mounts replaced and do the ol tighten it up thing. Drove it to klamath falls oregon from goleta ca and back. got 21 mpg. couldnt believe it.
