How many firefighters and emt-b/ emt-p do we have on the forum

former emt if that counts did the job as a vol. for about 5 years then ran out of time with owning my own company and all, so got out of it about 4 years ago. thinking of getting back into it, just got to see what happens in the next year or so

I thought I would bring this thread back from the dead.

My wife has been working since this past spring for an ambulance company here in Ohio. She alternates working (3) 24-hour shifts one week and (2) 24-hour shifts the other.

It's nice how it's setup.

She works 7am-7am. She automatically gets paid for 16-hours. If they get (7) trips before 11pm they get paid for 20-hours. If they get a trip after 11pm, they get paid 4-hours per trip. They can end up eith working till 11pm with only (7) trips and get paid 20-hours and sleep from 11pm-7am, or work 24-hours and get paid for 30+. She usually gets paid for at least 20-hours.

There's not a whole lot of pay for an Emt-Basic or Paramedic with private companies. I'm fortunate to be retired with a 20-year Highway Patrol retirement. I have a good check and benefits and don't have to rely on social security. I've told her that if I was going to be a Paramedic (she wants to advance to Paramedic), that I would work for a community so I was a government employee and had a public employees pension. She doesn't want to do it because as far as we have found out, she would have to be a paramedic AND a firefighter, and she has no interest in being a firefighter.

Is there anyone who's an EMT or paramedic that hasn't posted, and is anyone doing it for a municipality where you're not doing the job of a firefighter as well?

Most fire departments now have the EMT/Medic mixed into their stations. It is more economical for governments to do that.

The only way to be a medic and not be a firefighter around here is to work for a private company that is contracted to the local county governments. Louisville, KY is the only local that has their own EMS service within the fire department.

BTW, I am a firefighter.

2nd gen. vol fire fighter in north jerzy for 10 years and counting ... nothing else like it
:headbang:

Jim..She wants the Paramedic license. In Ohio does she have to do so many months/years as a Basic, Intermediate and then Paramedic? For me to get the Paramedic I would have to be in the field for almost 3 years before I could obtain the Paramedic license. Is that the same there. Also when she took her test did she take the National test or the State test?

i'm a volunteer firefighter for our local town. and when pennzoil had their refinery here i worked for pennzoil and had numorus training in hazorious materal .

She took and passed the NREMT national test. You're required to pass it to get your EMT-B, but you don't have to maintain it. She wants to maintain hers because we want to move to Tennessee some day.

She can go right back to school now to be a medic, but she wants to stay a basic for a while and learn what she can from her partners that are medics to have a better idea of what they're trying to teach her when she goes back.

I had taken the state test here in Illinois. I could have taken the national but opted not to. For what I am doing right now it is fine. The national test certification only lasted a year where the state is 4 years here. The department I am on requires you to hold your license for 8 years. I've been doing this for almost 4 years now and it seems like a second nature. In that last 4 years I have gotten my Lead CPR Intructor through my work, which also helps me in the field. Around you do the local departments offer extra classes for her in reguards to auto extrication, hazardous material spills or any other class for that matter? If they do tell her to take them and run with it. Can't beat that training. Plus it adds to her resume when applying elsewhere.

Im'a MET Mine Emergency Tech at the mines i work at! and i used to be a certified volunteer firefighter!

Captain here, FF Level III, Confined Space Rescue Tech, Hazmat Tech, EMT-B. Currently in charge of Fire Prevention and Investigation. My town requires all full time Firefighters to be at least EMT-B, with EMT-I preferred and FF Level II. We also run with 2 Paramedics per shift.

well just a update it has been a while since I started this thread. But now Im a probie(booter) FF/medic with about 4 months left in my probie year. ya All I can say is that you can only clean a station so many times in a day. But for you and venesa(sp) there are a few citys that run a medics on rescues that do not require you to be a ff. LIke houston, new york I think, a few down south I think. Also I know a few town in Az are starting to run ambulances.
