How long can it sit?

How long can a truck sit before things (engine/tranny/differentials) start going bad? And what would go bad? Would an engine go bad quicker than a tranny or other fluid filled gearbox?

I pulled a car out of storage after 10 years, put 1/2 of fluid in the trans, changed the oil, and drove home.

The big concern is flat spots in the bearings and rust in the coolant. Start it every so often and just let it run.

Looking at a truck with new engine and tranny that has been sitting for several years. Interested in the tranny for my truck. By the way, which manual transmissions came in the 84 & 85's? I have the Toyo Koygo in my 86 and it is on it's way out.

Next question......which is better ("better" being relative), Mazda's TK5 or Mitsubishi's FM145. If I am going to be messing with rebuilding/replacing the transmission I may as well put in the better of the two. And no, I do not want to mess with the M5oD conversion. Not right now at least.

The 145 is ok as long as you don't do anything heavy with it. That's how I blew up mine. I towed too m much with ATF in it. If you keep gear oil in it and don't tow over rated capacity the 145 is actually a pretty good trans.

It's better than the A4LD at least.

You can allways pull the plugs and squirt a little oil in the cylinders then crank on it for a bit to get the oil at least up to the cam and lifters if it has a guage see if the pressure rises a little then fire it off the seals are either bad or not you will find out soon enough I dont think there is a time limit depends on how bad they were when it was parked.

Engine and tranny are supposedly ~500 miles new. Electrical issue keeping it from running.

I am pretty sure the TK trans is stronger well atleast it can stand up to a 4.0L better then an FM or so I hear. Plus my Tk was cake to rebuild.

Did you rebuild yourself (I am assuming yes)? I would LOVE to learn how but don't really know where to start, other than removing the transmission and opening the case. Is it even possible without a snot load of specialized tools?

Yeah my dad and I did it ourselves, got a rebuild kit online for like 200 bucks plus the part that broke, came with everything (new gaskets, bearings, seals ect.) Then bought a new input shaft (broken part, roll pin fell out and broke off some teeth). It really didn't require anything special, most of it was just regular tools and it all just slides apart, the only thing that was difficult was the pressed bearings and my dad too it to a friend for them so I have no clue what they did to remove them. But it wasn't difficult overall just time consuming. Although I am mad I had to do it in the first place, it lost like 1st/2nd gear at one point and my dad didn't feel like fixing it himself and took it to a shop, the shifter fork broke and they replaced it but get this... they REUSED the roll pins! The pin finally came out and broke the teeth. ALways get new roll pins.

You guys have a manual to follow, or was it easy enough to just remember how it all went back together.

It kinda made sense just fine putting it back together... I mean we waited like 2 months for the parts to arrive while it was apart and got it back together. there really wasn't alot to it. But for all intensive purposes... keep track of where stuff goes. And no we didn't have a manual. :icon_thumby: I think I have a few pictures of it...

ok well thats all I can find... The main case isn't complicated at all just two sets of gears and the shifter forks. then the tail section is a little harder to put back together but goes together really easily so if you mess up its not impossible to change things around. And It appears most of the bearings where held in with snap rings...

wow. that really doesn't look all that complicated. No worse than an engine rebuild.
