just curious what you guys think??? what is a good lift hight for a SAS (coil sprung) 89 ranger..i live in ohio so thats what i off road on.woods and hills and mud.id like to do some more "real" rock crawling. so im not sure what way to go. i like how the ranger fits in tight spots and all .. im thinkin 6".but wouldnt mind 8" :icon_thumby:.. but am kinda worried about it being top heavy. just lookin for some oppinions. thanx

Well it's really up to your wants and your budget. Keep in mind that if you SAS with a full-width you'll also gain some stability from that.

SUNK: oh yeah DUHH i forgot about that!! but my budget isnt too much consern cuz you find everything on ebay cheep. as far as my wants go, i want a bad ass truck. big is allways sweet. but what does going higher going to stop me from being abel to do?? thanx for the help

CNOTE: yeah that makes sence. is that what is in you pic??

As low as possible. It really depends on your axle width, tire/rim combo, and link setup.

I think if you could get decent suspension travel out of only having 3-4" increase in height (from axle centerline to frame), you'd have a very well positioned COG.

Depending how high you go, you could be stopped from being able to go through off camber situations or tight trails since your COG will be much higher like JohnnyU brought up.

You mentioned rocks; for that I'd think you want to concern yourself more with articulation and traction than height.

The lower the better. Trim your fenders to get those bigger meats under there.

If you're doing a SAS, you'll need about 6" of lift just to clear the front differential housing, I'd try not to go any higher than that unless you're also going to full-width axles (in which case I'd then say 8" lift tops).

I am very concerned about articulataion and traction!!!but i am just looking to not spend too much for this swap cuz im layed off as of now. but soon i wont and will spend some money... so anyway lets talk about how to get all that articulation and traction!!! im willing to do just about anything so no oppinion is bad...i dont know too much about getting more articulation besides bigger coils and bigger shocks

oh i forgot to mention this, i AM going full width!!!!! full width is BAD ASS:3gears: i didnt know i HAD to have 6" of lift..is that true with full width?? i like the idea of 8" but what do you think?? is 8 going to "hurt" me any??

dont often vist parking garages and if i cant fit my truck in a car wash that is f-in SWEET!!!:yahoo:

thanx guys fo the help

There are some things that can only be learned through age and experience.

One of those such things is that you actually don't need a sky-high lift to have a capable rig. In fact, as I already stated you are really best off with as little lift as possible. The closer your rig is to the ground, the more extreme angle it will be able to traverse safely. If you haven't read it, the 4Wheeler's Bible by Jim Allen is a great read as well as a great introduction into some of the less-often covered principles behind off-roading and properly setting up or outfitting a rig.

I'm starting a new build after I parted out and scrapped my Ranger. It is based on my 1991 Chevy F/S. Even with the longer wheelbase (131.5") I'm shooting for no more than 6" of suspension lift with the D60/14FF. I hate mud, but I like trails and rocks, that should give you an idea of how to design your rig for its intended purpose.

X 1.000 ;)

When I was a TTB guy :icon_twisted: I had the following setup: 6" Skyjacker coils + 4" Tough Country Lift Kit + 3" BL= 8" aprox.

When I Sassed the ranger (FW too), I dropped the truck 1,5" more. So, I gained lower GC and more stability. The new 4-link front and 3-link rear suspension, gaves me lots of travel more than the old setup.

Good luck!

I'll agree with keeping it low.

A body lift is a great way to keep a low COG and get some tire clearence.

I'm shooting to only lift my 00 about 5" with my SAS.

Even now it feels a little tipsy on the trails. Probobly because the IFS can't flex for shit
