How Hard: Oil Pan Removal.

How hard is it to take an oil pan out of a 3.0 Ranger? I need one bad, so this spring I'm heading down to the u pull it and looking for one in decent condition that I can "refurbish" a wee bit since I can't find a used one anywhere else at the moment. Basically, will me and the old man be able to pop one off quick and be done, or is it going to be one of those "Crap it doesn't fit through there!" "I can't reach that bolt without removing that!" kind of things?
 
you gotta pull the motor or tranny, so yeah, it is one of THOSE projects.

Well that's depressing.

Tranny would probably be easiest do you think? For the JY truck anyway. Just let it drop. Dun need that anyway.

As for my truck.. I have no clue.
 
even after you pull the transmission you still have to unbolt the motor from its mounts and jack it up for the oil pan to come out.

you might check around, if your lucky, you can find a 3.0 already out of the truck (or van or car) and then you can just snag the pan off it. i dont know if the taurus or aerostar use the same oil pan, but the taurus pan is a sinch to get to (not sure about the aerostar).

Well that's going to be hell to do twice. I should just buy new, but 80 dollars for a pan and gasket really puts a dent in my wallet. :bawling:
 
well koda if you want to pm me i have a spare oil pan i will sell you for about 25-30 bucks , plus shipping , which shouldnt be too bad since we are both in new york , it is rusty , it needs to be banded down and repainted , it came off my new 3.0 and i used my old pan
 
surface rust , not very bad , the engine it came off of was from a 98 with 97k miles , but the pan is just about covered in rust , but it is all surface , my pan just looked better to me at the time
 
So it's not really effecting the quality of the metal? Could I possibly get a picture of it?

I could probably sand it down and apply a crap load of coats of paint.

I'll talk to my old man, and see what he says.
 
ok , i will go over to the farm today and get it and take a pic of it , it is at the farm becasue that is where i did the motor swap , and the rust does not affect the quality of the metal

Oil pan

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DROP ANYTHING! THIS WILL SAVE YOU HOURS AND HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS! My buddy and I did this the other day and I have no leaks or pressure issues. Drop the starter, you can lower the bottom of the oil pan about three inches which is just enough room to work with. The front of the pan will shimy down past the fan shroud cover, you just have to work with it. Once you get the top and bottom seperated, clean it off take the old gasket out, and here is where the trick is. Cut the new Gasket. Just cut it. You can work it onto the bottom of the pan and as you get it lined up put small Zip ties through the pan and gasket. Do this all the way around until the gasket it all lined up. Now just RTV the new gasket, and RTV it good where you created the cut. Now move it up into place. As you put the bolts in, just cut the Zip ties. My buddy and I did it in about three hours the other day, and the total cost of parts was $82.00. Hope this helps
 
your 2000 is very different than his 1993.

he will have to remove the engine, and if your going that far a new pan is in order, and make sure you use the "up-dated" gasket, the one that snaps to the pan.

Yep.

I decided to save my pennies (and twenties, damn prices) and go new. I don't want to have to do this again next spring.
