How hard is it to work at McDonalds??

I have a fun little trivia fact too.... Accounting for inflation and the rising cost of goods, the average American worker makes LESS today than in 1980.

As far as burger joints go, Five Guys FTW!

exactly my point, and 5 guys sucks, no flavor... fat burger is much better, or a local place i like is burger inn, they have ostrich, wild boar, elk, buffalo, salmon, chicken, turkey, pork, and a few other, burgers

There are several MdD's in town we know to avoid, due to their penchant for hiring some less-than-stupid individuals. They have pictures to go by, FFS.......

I usually stick to either the Nuggets or the Chicken Selects. Less assembly issues.

to be safe, go for the hashbrown patties only, or drinks, if you get them yourself...

I have no issues with their breakfast items, on the rare occasions I can get there early enough to order them. IMO, they have better pancakes than IHOP.

Thing is with McD's is thelike to bring out something new on their menu that could change it all, they try to keep stuff simple for people.

Let me try to break it down on what its like for me at Mcd's. When I first started over a year ago, had no clue what to do. Well after a few weeks, got use to working front counter, since thats where they put me and kept me for 5 months straight before putting me else where due to people quiting. And this was first starting me on afternoons then mornings then afternoons again to where Im finaly at, night closing. Openers and closers are the people who get the hours, we dont get sent home early due to labor. Anyways I will say when it comes to making a sandwhich, its not all that easy really, not when you are being rushed to do it. My boss likes to use quality not quanity but we know both are just as important. Now the person that got the job of finishing the big BigMAc for Jim was the assembler. Its there job to make sure that the sandwhich was made right before wrapping it up and serving it. If they fail then everybody fails but goes equally for everybody if somebody else down the line or before them messes up. Having to memorize what goes on a sandwhich let alone when people customize them doesnt make stuff easy, you really have to be on your toes thinking non stop. What can make it worse is when you are holding on something when you shouldnt be, lets say during a rush as its called and on busy days there is a person on every station and they are responsible for making sure that they are doing their job as they should. Now lets say that we are holding on something as simple as buns toasting, that effects everything (yes we have a bun buffer person). That means driveway can be held up for a few more seconds and so is front line and if you add up a few seconds evry 5 minutes, that really adds up and that is loss in profit and loss in time that cant be made up.

My place just got dual lane drive through less then a year ago and its said by my stroe manager that there should be no such thing as a line in drive thru now. Heres the thing that people dont seem to relize, just because there are 2 lanes and one can keep going while the other is held up, we are still humans making the food meaning we cant go any faster then we can go. We can only go so fast. When you come through drive thru wanting something that is out of the norm. aka no salt fries, expect to wait some of the time, if you do it during a huge rush, you may get lucky and et them without wait due to fries are always down cooking during that time. But if not during a rush, expect to wait, they take 3 min and 10 seconds to cook from the time the button is pushed to cook them.

But dont stop me there, think that all places fryer are created equal, no. My McDonalds and other that are following too and no other restraunt does this, we have an automatic filtration system on our fryers. What does this mean for ypu? Well it means that after 12 cookings, it asks to filter the oil in a container under the fryers that are cleaned and the filter changed twice a day by hand and we are to never refuse a filtering, and yes the boss can find out if a filtering was refused too. When the fryers oil lever get slightly lower, it auto filles with new oil out of the back from a huge tank. And the old oil that went from only being good for 7 days to 9-11 due to the new fryers (which also use 1/3 less oil too) ges sent to the back to a holding tank for proper disposal.

Working McDonalds is a gamble really, meaning yes there are guides to how much to cook, but that is as far as it goes now a days. It takes working there and learning your shift for how to cook and how much along with events that are happening around up, such as highschool football games and local events. Sunday, Monday and Tuesdays are days that see the least amount of business, hince why I go into work later but still get full time hours during the week.

Closing is a whole nother beast. Ya we clean the place but the good thing I like about it is, there are fewer people to have to deal with and I am a night person too. I would rather clean the place then do half the crap that is done there. I was just never much of a people person but McD's has broken my shell on that quiet a bit.

All I can say is if theres something you want answered, just ask me, I might know the answer to it about McD's.

Oh and as far as being told to think about something there, I just tell them "im not paid enough to think".

I must be an odd duck... I was the "I dont want to work, give me everything free" generation. I did NOT graduate high school on time, I started drinking in the 7th grade, did drugs for a few years got in some trouble and BOOM! I woke up one day. Got my ass out of bed, got a job washing cars and have worked my balls off ever since. I dont know what happened but something clicked and I realized the road I was headed down was quickly going no where. I now work 50+ hours a week as a professional metal fabricator with full benefits, drive a decently nice truck, have multiple savings accounts AND a 401k.The only thing I'm missing is a place to call my own. Sure renting is easy but I want my own house. I'm not trying to make my self out to be some kind of hero but if I'm lucky I might inspire some one.

Thats kinda the samething im going through now, woke up one day and just said its time. Since then I have been doing good IMO.

When Reagan was elected President, I've noticed words like Reaganominics, Reaganized, etc. The worse part was when "the movie star" fired the union workers at some airport (Air traffic controllers) & many corporations followed suit. In the end, the top-level management became "fat cats" & workers aren't getting their fair share of the 'pie'-
I would go through a whole long debate over what you said there, but I'll save it for another thread.... likely in the tailgate forum if you want to go over this issue.

I have always thought it looked hard. I'd hate to be back there, the one reason I go to MCDs is how crazy fast there are. I love Wendys but there to slow around here.

Yep.. its not something that can be forced. You have to want it. My parents ragged on me for years to clean my act up and truth be told, it pushed me farther into rebellion. Not saying that some people cant be nudged along but I think a lot of young "adults" have the "you cant tell me what to do" attitude. I dont want to tell anyone to give up on their kids/friends/loved ones but at some point you have to draw a line and decide if its best just to let that person find out the hard way.

"You only get one chance at life and if you dont make something of it when you are young, it will only be harder the older you get". It took me a long time to figure out that my father was only speaking the truth when he would tell me that. We are best friends now, after many years of butting heads and arguing.

Working at McDonald's is really hard! That's why they pay so well.

It's always people that don't have a clue.

Wonder if he ever heard of 'the misery index' under Carter, or remember his 'national malaise' that looks great compared to today's economy.

i'm just glad if everything i order and paid for ends up in the bag when i leave. i could care less what order it's in as long as it's all there.

but really, you're paying $5 for a meal that's ready 19 seconds after the words leave your mouth. and you're not even saying any words, you just pick a number. what are you expecting?

most of the time, i just dont go to fast food restaurants. the food is awful for you and, generally, you end up with an experience like mr. oaks is talking about. i can put together a better tasting meal from the shit that's kicking around on my kitchen floor. no thanks

dude, sorry, but no, if you think working at mcdonalds is hard, you need to learn to do manual labor, because thats probably the only job that i think takes less mental capacity...

the only thing that i couldn't make, that mcdonalds makes, is the big mac, and the only reason i say that, i don't have the order of that one burger memorized...

honestly, even most of the specialty sandwiches that are only around for a limited time, i know them... and i don't eat there all that often...

slightly off topic, check out what they are serving in eastern canada right now:

Big mac is simple....box open top bun on the inside top club sits on it and bottom bun goes on iside of bottom...ready for this now....two squirts if mac sauce, one on the club bun (center bun btw) and one ont the bottom. Then the dehydrated onion on the same places the shreded lettuse on the same spots too then 2 pickles not touching on the club bun and a slice of cheese on the bottom. Next two peices of 10:1 or regular meat one on the club and one on the bottom...now here where it becomes a big mac one of two ways...either take the whole club part and slide it to over the bottom then put the top bun on or flip the club over and close the box...when you open it, shouild be a big mac. And all of that is done in about 30-45 seconds including the 10-12 seconds it takes to taost the buns too. Now do that to up to 5 of them at a time when there are specials going on for them.

Man do I hate knowing all of this.
