How does vacuum hubs work?

Can someone explain the principle of vacuum hubs? Is it connected through the engine vacuum system or does the torque on the front wheels have something to do with engaging it?

Reason I ask is my 4.0 has a bad MAF(1993) I believe that kinda problem, running rich affects the engine vacuum, Since Im stuck with one manual hub and one auto I'd like not to ruin the good manual hub because a lack of vacuum on the other is causing me to pull three wheel drive.

the vacuum hubs were only available for a few years after Ford went with the IFS.....after many problems with them they just went with no hubs at all...

as far as you are concerned, Ford never had vacuum hubs, just the crappy auto's......

as has been said before, get a pair of manual hubs and enjoy

Since you have a '93, you don't have Vaccum hubs, just an Auto hub.

It locks itslef in when your axle shaft starts spinning, and unlocks when the wheel spins backwards by way of the ground, not the axle shaft ie: 4wd dis-engaged and you're driving in reverse

OK that makes sense now. Railman, if I could afford the manuals believe me I would jump on them. I made a deal on here for a set with an awesome price and for the life of me cant get any money together. (besides there is already one manual hub on there, warn at that!)
