I'm in a real time crunch tomorrow, in a span of 2-3 hours I am going to attempt to have my flywheel out to get it to a machine shop in time. Therefore, I will brave the cold tonight and do as much as I can, like remove the front driveshaft, skid plate, and pull of the shifter and stuff. How do I disconnect the manual t case shifter, so I can take the boot off?

I have an 89 4x4 and on the driver side of the transfer case there is a big ass bolt right in the middle of the shifter linkage. If you take that bolt out it will allow you to get it out of the way and drop the transfer case. I don't know know about yours but on mine their are 4 tiny torx head bolts in the shifter boot surround the will allow you to lift the boot out of the way to take the shifter off the trans

Posting this topic again in the urgent forum, as I am now working on it...

If you remove the boot you can actually remove the lever itself, you'll see "flats" on the lever, put a wrench on it and screw it off. You can pull the tranny and t-case as one unit and not have to remove the shift linkage.

Do you mean from the inside of the cab? I have the boot unbolted, but can't slide it off cause of the t case handle being in the way

The knob pulls straight off. It may take a lot of strength to do it.

Oh really? Ok I'll try that. Worst case is I break it, and replace the knob i guess. How about the front drive shaft? I have removed the caps and bolts from the front u joint, is that all thats required? Or do I have to remove the back somehow too? I'm trying to take off the skid plate right now, its taking me forever cause the bolts are so hard to reach when laying on your back, plus its freezing outside ha ha

Pull.

If that doesn't work, pull harder.

If that doesn't work, put a 13 mm open end wrench under the bottom of the ball and hit it with a hammer.

Also, I know what the weather is like here, I'd say that "freezing" is probably a very generous description of what it's like in Saskatoon.

Its actually not terrible right now, only about -26 Celsius with the wind. Still pretty nipply when your crawling around in the snow with no gloves ha ha.

Any clues about the driveshaft? Does it slide out the front of the t-case, or unbolt?

you smokin crack. lol

I think your front shaft unbolts from the case.

Yea thats what it looks like. Finally got the skid plate off!! Now I have lots of room to get at those back driveshaft bolts. I need to come inside about every ten minutes or else I get shivering too bad to hold the wrench steady ha ha. Can't wait till that driveshaft is off so I can work on the shifter boot inside the cab.... with my friend I wouldn't trade for a million dollars right now, Mr. Interior Heater :yahoo:

Well time to call it quits for the night I think. Words cannot describe how cold my hands and feet are :bawling:. I saved myself an hour of work though in the morning hopefully. Its off to the muffler shop at 8 am sharp to have them torch off the exhaust bolts, then straight to a friends garage to pull the tranny. With any luck the flywheel will be off by 11 am so I can take it somewhere to have resurfaced by noon before they close. If I can't make that time window then the truck is sitting till at least monday, when all the shops re open.

Iam cold from just reading your posts...........good luck!
