I have a pretty much stock 88 ranger, lifted a couple inches. I want to drive across beaches and through axle high sandy rivers to get driftwood to burn in my fireplace, but its loose coarse black sand. What would you do to make a reliable sand truck? bigger tires? lockers? I have no idea.

I'm not much for sand-riding, but I'd guess that a locker and some Rosie O'Donnell tires would be a good start.

I know I saw a sign at a beach that you were allowed to drive on once and it said that you had to pressure down to 5 PSI before you were allowed on the sand.

I also saw a guy try to drive his Focus on the beach once, without pressuring down.

That was funny. Until I had to go help him get unstuck anyway.

I bet 5psi would tear the shit out of your sidewalls of your tires. do they make lockers for these tiny axles I have?

Just take a look at any prerunner truck and do the math.

Yes they make lockers. Lots of guys on this sight run the lock rite I believe, and I think theres a detroit locker for the 7.5 as well. Have you checked out the TRS Fab section? Theres a tab on the homepage, far right

Air down and run the widest tire you can, like a 12.50 or bigger. It'll help you float on the sand, similar to how snow shoes work in the snow. IMO a A/t tread is better than a M/t or other aggressive tread.

airing your tires down will be the biggest thing you can do to help you in the sand. i wouldnt go as low as 5 psi, i usually run at least 10. thats plenty of air to keep the tire seated. wider tires and lockers will def help, but you should be able to get around just fine airing down.

LIKE THEY SAID....but lockers arent nesessary in all situations. get some wide all terrain tires, mud tires dig in. and put the pressure at 5 to 15psi. beadlock wheels will help too. i have alot of exp driving in sugar sand here in mid florida. plus momentum is good too...

Sand tires are also typically paddles in the back and 'guide' tires on the front for really loose stuff. At least thats how I did my quad up for the beaches and it worked pretty well.

Of course this most likely means nothing on a 4x4 truck.

I wonder if a little ol 2.9 would have enough power to move tires that are that aggressive.

nah, its not. I just put it together from two broken free rangers, so now I can either sell it for like 500 dollars, which would pay me about 3 dollars an hour after all the time I put into it, or I can make it work for me.

well then. cut the fenders and put some 33-1250's on it and air them down to 10 psi and go where ever you want.... is it 2wd?

i would say no. plus you dont need anything like that to get around in the sand.

keep it and make it work for you. put a good set of all terrrains or mud terrains, air down and have a blast. youll get around just fine, no need for high dollar paddle tires and such. i spend alot of time at the silver lake sand dunes here in michigan and have never had a problem getting around or climbing the hills even when i was on stock tires. just airing down, picking the right gear in 4 low and keeping momentum.
