Well its time to go to college and thats a 12 hour drive and the 4:10's Are just too tall for the trip, so I want to go for 3:73's. I have a supplier for gears but, How hard is it to change my ring and pinion.

I have a 31 spline axle if that makes and difference

Buy a 3.73 axle, upgrade tire size, or drive slower. If you have to ask, it's too hard.

^ yep. Feel like I tell people this all the time. A gearset is not a bolt in affair, and should not be attempted by someone who does not know what they are doing.

Well then I guess I'll just have to deal with it since I'm not taking the whole axle out and its going to be hell to brake me from that post traction

How much would it cost to take the center section to a machine shop?

If you're wanting to go down to a shallower ratio, easiest way to effectively do the same thing is to put some taller tires on.

If you're running say, 235/75R15s, try stepping up to a 31x10.50R15.

Plus one on what junkie said. and it would be a lot cheaper too than a gear change and faster

How is it too tall? That is a factory ratio/tire size for an FX4 Ranger.....

Seriously, most ppl would kill for 4.10 gear set....I know I would. I have 3.73's and 31's, and well its pretty damn gutless.

Easiest thing to do would be to change to a taller tire.

Next bet is to find some axles in a junk yard with 3.73s, they are very common.

Last option is to take it to a R & P/axle shop and have them change the gearsets [expensive].

If you were in CA I'd drive to your place this week and do most of the work to change our axles.

No Just wanting to actually do the speed limit on the highway, And I think my tires, even though labeled as 31" tires are actually 30.25"

Yeah, that's the case with most tires. What RPM are you at when cruising on the highway at 60?
