Hi,

I am trying to get all the air out of the power steering system, since I just replaced the pump. I went through a quart of steering fluid and there is still air bubbles in the system. The pump makes a loud whine. I disconnected the return line and plugged the outlet on the reservoir, then cranked the engine after removing coil wire. Is there any better way to do it, or just keep putting fluid in and cranking. It seems like it should take less than a quart of fluid to bleed the system?!

Thanks for any advice!
Anthony

I was thinking about lifting the front off the ground and turning the wheels to "burp" it until there are no more bubbles.

fill it up, turn it from lock to lock a bunch of times, top it off, repeat. Then just drive it, it will go away eventually.

If that doesnt work (and it sometimes doesnt) you need to crack open your return line and turn it lock to lock, tighten it back up, turn it lock to lock, and drive it.

If that doesnt work, you may have a pinhole in your return line.

The above mentioned is the most feasible way to do it. The real problem is that Ford decided they wanted to have their systems bled under vacuum. But the caps are never available.

Never heard of vacuum bleeding a power steering pump. I only changed the fluid once in mine. Just suck out the old fluid and pour new fluid in. Lift the front tires off the ground and turn the wheel all the way one direction, then the other way with the engine off. I did this about 10 times and then started the engine and repeat. Even thou my Ford has the P/S whine, mine would be consider a mouse sqeek to other Ford's P/S pumps.

a hammer works great....like a 20 pound sledge.

then mod a sag into its old spot.

seriously though captain led has it whooped..:icon_thumby:

OK, I will try that this weekend and let you know how it goes.
