The other day, one of the guys I work with who drives a '00 GMC Sonoma 4.3L, is talkin sh!t about how his Sonoma is a street monster. Well....I'm notorious at work for being the "hotrod ranger guy" and he wants to race.

I figure what the heck, might as well. Dont have anything to lose.

So we find ourselves a nice abandoned stretch of pavement, 25mph rolling start with both of us in 1st gear. One, Two, Three and away we go. At first we were dead even with each other, shift at 4300, next thing I know his front bumper is even with the back of my cab. After that he couldn't get caught up.

Later on I got some more info on his truck, because by all rights he shoulda won. At least, I thought.

Sonoma:
4.3L 262cid, 180hp/245ftlbs
5-Speed Manual, 3.08 Open Diff

Ranger:
4.0L 245cid, 160hp/220ftlbs
5-Speed Manual, 3.08 Open Diff

Hes got the extended cab shortbed, and mine is too.

Is it me or is something amiss here? Does the Sonoma weigh more or something? No luck finding a dynosheet for the 4.3L either :icon_confused:

throwing gears is a skill my friend and you are obliviously better than him. that minor power difference wont mean shit if he sucks at shifting.

if i were in the gm and it was running properly...you would most likely never seen my doors let alone got ahead.

or i may have missed a shift and you would have whooped my ass too.

thats racin!!!:bye:

one thing for sure...you took the wind out of his braggin sails....:icon_thumby:

Haha it was nice to see him slip away behind me, I admit. Honestly thought I was in for a good ole fashioned ass whippin'

Guess he needs to learn his shifts a bit better :icon_thumby:

On a sidenote, I got the ooh-rah from the other Ford guy at work after we told him what happened =)

Dude, that was freakin aWESOME!

I know a guy just across the state line in Kansas that told me about a 2.8 '85 ranger he has. Ed said that they guy who owned it before him (now passed away) tweaked the hell out of it and he also outran Ed's 4.3L S-10.

I had planned on buying that truck, but it was too rusted at the time to fix. I did check the rear axle. It had a 3.73 7.5" as well as the TK5 speed.

Awesome story about the chevy in your rearview. Bring on some more, please!

Theres plenty of Ricers in this area who think they are hot stuff, I'm sure this wont be the last time I post up a Victory Ranger story.

Oh yeah same here, plenty of ricers. I beat a few of them with my 99 3.0L when I had it. But now..it's weird, people want to race me when I'm on my little Kawasaki Ninja. Although it's only a 250, give me a break, no ricer is going to keep up with a motorcycle from 0-60 any day.

Just a couple days ago, I was stopped and a lowered Chevy Silverado, 20 inch rims, low profs stops next to me and starts revving his engine at me. So of course, I can't let him think he's a badass. I just sit and when it turned green, gunned it, I was across the intersection before he moved five feet. He peeled out too. I slowed down so he could catch up and I looked at him and just shook my head, he wouldn't look at me! hahaha, great times

This guy down the road from me, has a 1200cc bike. Lets see you take him on. :icon_thumby:
Drag Chopper FTW

I drove past him today going into town. The rear tire on that thing has to be at least a foot wide.

Oh yea, and I toasted a ricer car in a minivan a while ago. Haha.

haha nice! I just remembered...it's Friday. Every Friday night all the lame ricers go to Hastings and hang out, most likely play with each other. In my old Ranger, I had a PA system and a friend and I would just go through the parking lot and make fun of all the body kits and fart cans. Had a couple people chase after us once...haha

Haha, that sounds like a good time.

I haven't discovered where all the ricers hang out here in town yet, although I do catch 3 or 4 of em sitting in front of Little Ceasar's Pizza about once every other week.

One of these days I'll figure out where they all hide at, and good times are bound to happen.

My brother had an '03 Sonoma crewcab with an auto. It was a lot quicker than my B2. I really wanted it. But it was too cheesy of an interior and I couldn't abide it. The plastic was milk jug quality and it had many electrical issues. The engine and tranny outclass any Ranger though. It was a 190hp, 250ft3 MPFI engine. The 2000 is still a throttle body. I still think the 2000 should whoop a Ranger. I had a friend with a '93 4.3 auto 2wd in about 2002. He had a tree cut by the power company and gave me the wood. I had a '91 4.0 4x4 with 3.55s. We did about 6-8 loads together back and forth. We raced every return trip and I could never catch him.

Also, when Sam's 4.3 Blazer out run the 5.8 F250 pulling identical 6,000# trailers--I was driving the F250 and it wasn't mine and I was sure I would win and was beating it like a disgruntled ox.

I have a hard time speaking out against a 4.3. It has 60 years of continous lineage behind it. What's not to like? It was standard in full-size vans and pickup. It's a hell of a motor and GM certainly thought more of it than Ford thought of their 4.0.

I thought the same thing, that his 4.3L TBI shoulda whooped me, thats why I was curious about how I managed to stomp him. At this point I'm sure its only because he didn't shift properly. Can't change the past though, I still beat him, haha.
