i have a single cab shortbed 4.0 and i was wondering if there were different front coil spring combinations people have tried to use. i heard different things about xj coils being too soft and short lived. and ive heard something about zj and f150 coils. how can f150 coils be softer than ranger coils? im just curious if anyone has tried any of this stuff and how well it worked because of sick of my front end not moving. im gonna try and give ttb one more chance to see if i can get it to flex before i just put the truck on full widths.

yeah, i allready got those. and i obviously am not getting the kind of flex i desire, and i doubt anyone else is either. with my chevy rear leaves i can get up over huge rocks and stuff my tires way up in the fenderwells, but the front end doesnt move whatsoever. has any tried early bronco or f150 coils? got any flex pics? thanks, josh

You want Rancho 3" XJ coils. They are rated at 240lb/in where are 4.0L Ranger coils are 500lb/in. You could also call Coil Spring Specialties. They were recommended to me from a local spring shop for custom coils. They are in St. Marys, KS. There number is 785-437-2025.

Did you remove the front sway bay? Have you tried longer shocks?

On my explorer, I did the 2" skyjacker coils, it worked AWESOME, Have you unhooked your sway bar? That right there probably makes the biggest difference.

arnt xj coils to soft and sag relatively fast? yeah, i got the swaybar removed and my shocks arnt a limiting factor the coils dont compress nearly enough to bottom out the shocks

the custom spring idea sounds good, but sas is starting to sound better.

im still curious if anyone has tried EB or f150 coils. flex pics would be great

I would think that F150 coils would be alot heavier, granted they have to hold up a fullsize rig, and generally a v8.

I put 6" xj coils on my explorer five years ago and they have only sagged about half an inch, if that. I can't remember what brand they are but they were the stiffest ones I could find, extremely solid ride on an xj but very soft on an rbv. The xj coils work well for articulation but it's not something to be done without doing something about the steering and also you will need good sway control for highway driving. I ended up double shocking both ends or it was in a continuous state of motion, like riding a boat down the highway. My front is still limited by the shocks but funds don't allow changing them at the moment but it will do for the moment.

dude, just do coilovers with the proper spring rate. in the end, it will be cheaper and ride like a dream.

If you read the article I did on Jeep springs on the tech page--the article was title Maximum Flex for Your TTB, not Jeep Springs on your TTB. It tells you how to measure your truck and figure out what springs are required to use ALL of your available travel.

Once you know what your springs should be, find out if something can be adapter--as I did--or if you need to have custom coils wound. When I did mine I did not have Jeep XJ coils in mind. I just combed various catalogs that published the lengths and rates of their springs until I found a spring that was correct. When I looked up the part number, it was a Jeep XJ. Don't try to shortcut the process. There are a lot of people doing straight axle swaps because they didn't try to understand what they have and make it work.

well, will how have the xj coils worked for you? have the sagged much or do they keep their length? would you recomend that i use them on my regular cab shortbed with the 4.0 or should i find something a little stiffer? also, i want to get six or seven inches of lift do you think i could use the xj 8 inch lift coils to achieve this or would i maybe have to move the coil buckets up a few inches higher?

There's a ton of info on this subject all over the place here if you look around just a little.

I have Skyjacker 6" XJ coils on my BII. No sagging, not too soft, works great (my Rancho coils I had before got all sagged out however). The SJ coils will likely work on your reg cab Ranger as well (they seem to feel just the tiniest tad bit stiffer than the Ranchos did).

Like Martin mentioned, be sure your steering linkage angles are together before you go experimenting with softer coils (99.9% chance it's NOT if you already have a typical lift kit on your truck). 4" is the maximum practical lift height with the softer coils, anything higher and the steering gets too cumbersome to deal with (use a bodylift for any added height above that).

Flex pics are on my BII Cardomain page.
