Hello I have a 97 ranger 2wd 4.0 ext cab. I was wondering how big of a tire I could go with out lifting it and not throwing off the speedo? If I do lift it im thinking maybe only about 4 inches. What size tire could I run if i did lift it? Just looking at my options and money. If it does through off my speedo how could I fix it? Would I go get a new speedo gear?

Thanks Guys

31x10.50x15 would probably be the biggest with no lift, but it'll throw off your speedo a lil.

4" lift and you could fit 33's, but your speedo will be off a lot.

There's a calculator in the tech pages for figuring out how far off your speedo will be. Depending on what speedo gear you need, you may be able to find one in a junkyard, or you might have to order one through some place like LMC Truck or through Ford.

A bigger problem might be gearing. Depending on what gears are in the rear end of your truck may limit what tires you can put on without re-gearing. If you have 3.45 or 3.56 gears, forget going to 33's without regearing. It'll be a bit of a dog with 31's. If you have 3.73 gears, it will be livable with 31's but a dog with 33's. If you have 4.10s you'll be ok with 31's or 33's.

Im pretty sure even with a 4" lift you'll rub on the fenders. Mine did at least but idk if the two wheel has the same clearance

Interesting... I put a custom built 5" lift on my choptop and it cleared 33's just fine so I figured that the bigger wheel openings that a 93-97 Ranger has it wouldn't be an issue at all. A 3" suspension lift and I still didn't have rubbing issues really, rear tires tucked up in the fenders and the fronts would get real close, but it was ok.

I'm pretty sure 31s will clear with a 4", it may depend on the type of lift though.

I called the local Ford dealer about getting a new speedo gear, and the one I need (21 tooth) was like $3.

can always trim the fenders....

as for the speedo any increase in size will throw it off its just a matter of how much
