I got a friend that has a 1999? ranger with a 4.0l that needs teh thermostat replaced, how bad is it, i know on some cars you have to remove alot of stuff and other its just a radiator hose and 3 bolts. So what all has to come off to replace it.

Thanks

Remove the air tube for access and it's 3 10 mm bolts to take the housing off. You don't need to take the radiator hose off if you don't want to.
Make sure air release valve is UP.
Haynes says torque to 120 in/lb.
Ford says torque to 18 ft/lb.

I stripped one before so I use the lower and it's held fine, no leaks.

If you have to ask that question then there is something else you NEED to know. The main problem found with changing the thermostat is novices fail to get the system completely FULL of coolant after the install.
First fill the radaitor as full as you can get it. Then turn the heater ON to the HOT SETTING then start the engine with the radiator cap off. Then as the engine heats up continue to fill the radiator.
After the top hose finally begins to get hot from the hot coolant coming out of the engine, it will be time to make sure it is full to the brim, then and ONLY then put the radiator cap back on.
Failure to get the system completely full is what causes head and headgasket failure.

On my '93 there is 1 bolt hidden behind the alternator bracket/belt tensioner. It takes about 30 minutes if I can remove the tensioner and about 1hr 30min if I remove alternator and bracket. It's an easy job, but just a little time consuming.

Aside from pulling the accessory belt I generally find it easier to also unbolt the
alternator bracket to give me more working room.

Then again I have big hands and long arms...
