My credo
I poop in the furnace.
So, I quit smoking recently and my sense of smell has increased like 1000% and I realized... my house uhhh kinda reeks.

Get your jokes out of the way, I'll wait...

Ok so now that you got that out of your system, I actually keep my house pretty clean. Its not a moldy smell, mostly wet dog, farm animal, and my body odor smell. I realize taking a shower can fix the latter but for the other stinks I'm thinking of getting one of these fancy pants hepa air purifiers.

Anyone have one in their home? Do they work? I also get mild seasonal allergies when the pine trees splooge and they say they help with that? The ones I'm looking at for the size of my house are around 400 bucks for each floor so I don't wanna waste 800 bucks on hippy bull crap.

A Hepa Air Purifier will get rid of some of the odors, and a good Hepa Filter in your havc system will get rid of the pollen.
But to really get rid of odors you've got to give the old homestead a good cleaning with some good odor removing products. If you have carpeting, spread baking soda on it, let sit for an hour or 2 and vacume it up.
You can get rid of some odors in kitchen by boiling vinegar in a pot on the stove. Put a quart or so in a pot and bring it to a boil for 30 minutes.
Best stuff wife ever found was Rocco & Roxie Odor Eliminator.. Haven't used it in the house too much cause we don't smoke and wife keeps house clean. I have used it in an enclosed motor home, and the stuff is great at removing any odor you can name.
Safe around pets, and also removes stains.
Only place to get it is on Amazon or a janitorial supply store.
And, check that janitorial store...most carry many products to eliminate odors, even old smokers odor.
Remember, the odors are coming from the "soft"surfaces that have trapped the odors....furniture cushions, drapes, carpet, and from particles on your hard surfaces. You gotta clean them real good.

An electrostatic precipitator helps also. It will do stuff that filters alone can’t do. Sometimes found in combination units with the hepa filter.

I cant really put one in my hvac system since well I don't really have one lol. I was looking at floor units like these.

I have all hardwood floors but do have big area rugs and I took them all outside to air out but will also do the baking soda trick. Oddly enough the kitchen and bathroom of my house are the two rooms that really don't smell. My bathmat was pretty gross and once had a mushroom growing out of it but I decided to throw it away. :icon_rofl:

As a Carpet Cleaner for over 10 years, i encountered a lot of houses with odors. The customers would always ask " how do I get rid of that odor?" Usuall cat piss or dog dander were the source of the smell, so i would tell them "1st step is get rid of the source." But since most people dont want to get rid of the animals causing the smell, they keep the smell. Hepa filters work, but are not miracle workers and will not make your animals smell better. Get rid of the source, if you want to get rid of the smell. Simple as that.

I try to keep the goats and chickens outside but they always find a way in!

Also try to apply some type of Enzyme to your carpet. It will stink like a mofo for a while, but when its done stinking, the biological matter is broke down and no more "smelly". Try to google P.UR.T., from a company called ChemDry. I used that stuff on all biological messes, puke blood poop piss. Works on them all

Give them an ultimatum...either stay outside, or become dinner. :icon_rofl:

What do you mean by enzyme?

Chem-Dry has a pet urine removal treatment referred to as P.U.R.T. that actually works! ... Many companies will remove the stain that urine leaves behind but will not remove it from deep within the carpet. Urine holds a ton a germs and bacteria within it and cause a health hazard within your home

I worked for Chem Dry for over 10 years, the PURT works

@Dirtman this

Hmmmm quick search online shows theres a chem-dry place near me that will simply come pick my rugs up and take them to be cleaned. Gonna call when they open and try and get a price. I highly doubt there's any pee on my rugs though (I have gotten drunk enough to not remember where the bathroom is so...) My dog on the other hand is housebroken.

Good move. WARNING: it can get $$$ for the PURT. There also may be a pick-up/delivery charge added. I usually charged like $65 a gallon, one gallon may not do it. Prices are also set by the owner, NOT THE FRANCHISE, so get price estimate first. And ask him if you can watch while he used the Black Light.

FYI: Nobody thinks they have pee in their carpet; EVERYONE does.

The Blacklight does NOT LIE. Piss will be bright yellowish green, puke or vomit will be white-ish, blood is black or dark brown. Spray it with the PURT, it should start foaming immediately, the more foam, the more it's working, and may need a second dose in a day or two. One rule of thumb: if you have a spot the size of a saucer, start from the outside, goin towards the middle of the spot, but the size of a large dinner plate. Basically double the size of the spot with PURT.

Congratulations for quitting smoking, that's something many people claim they can't do. My father survived the depression, racing motorcycles with no brakes, World War II- including landing on Omaha Beach on D Day, and a life working in woolen mills breathing fibers but cigarettes killed him slowly and painfully over ten years. You might try Febreeze to cut some of the odors or maybe washing the floors with something like Pine Sol or Lestoil.
