Okay, here is a tricky one.
My 2.3 will not start in the heat of the day when the temp is up over 90F degrees.
I have replaced several item including fuel pump, fuel pump relay, fuel pressure regulator, engine coolant temp sensor, air-intake temp sensor but still the same problem.
I get good fuel pressure at the schrader valve, I do have spark, yellow-orange in color.
Then engine turns over but does not seem it is firing or not getting fuel.
I think the only other thing it might be is a faulty coil pack.
Could a faulty coil pack cause this sort of problem. I know I have spark at least in the 1 and 2 cylinder, didn't check other two other than that I am at a lost.
The only code on the computer reports closed EGR valve at start.
Any ideas, or other possibilities

Thanks
BTW, My Ranger is an 89, 4x4, runs good otherwise in the cool of the day or if the temp is in the low 80's.

Could be a cracked coil pack, failing crank sensor, or ignition control module. Check spark on all cylinders on both packs.
Spark should be bright blue to white blue. Yellow orange spark is very weak.

Thanks for the information. I will give it a go this weekend when I get home. I bought some Bosch double platinum to replace the other sparks. I also have a couple of Accel coil packs and wires coming, hopefully they will be there when I get home.

I suspected the coil pack with the poor spark color. Just wanted some confirmation before I went and threw more money at it.

I will let you know after doing this.

DON'T USE BOSCH DP'S....ONLY USE AUTOLITE OR MOTORCRAFT.........

it sound like fuel pressur is ok but make sure you change the fuel filter..... I am confused if you are getting no spark and no fuel?

my guess is the ignition module if it was the coil i think it would be acting up other times ie. in the rain, etc. the ICM are notorious for this issue.......make sure you put all the ground screws back in and also the special heat//grease.......

Well, changed coil packs, I did not get the plugs and wires due to slow shipping on wires. It still does it. This afternoon under the hot sun, I jumped in and turned it over, and it just turns over. Now if I feather the gas I can get it to run but still no power, move it into the shade wait 15 minutes and usually it will start up no problem. Also it does have spark, and fuel pressure.
I have read about the ICM issue, but my truck is distributorless where exactly is the ICM, or is that the same as the coil resistor?

Thanks for all of your help. I was really hoping for a bad coil pak, but now down to coil resistor

The EGR vavle would have nothing to do with this, would it, I know mine was clogged up. I did clean it out today, won't be able to try it out again until the heat of the day tomorrow though.

follow the wires from the coils they should take you to the icm.....if you remove the icm make sure you put every screw back in. they act like grounds and truck will not start with out them........what was your koeo, and your koer fuel pressure, also when you turned the truck off did the fuel presssure drop more than about 5 psi in 5 minutes.....did you do the fuel pressure test when the truck would not start?......

I checked the fuel pressure while it was not starting with someone turning over the ignition and with it off. it had excellent pressure. I did not have a pressure tool, but it sprayed out strong, and I am guessing over 40pounds of pressure just by the spray. it did not flow out but sprayed strong. Got me in the eye. I think it is the ICM. It acts like the timing is off. I can get it to start but I have to feather the gas to keep it running, and it has no power. I will get an icm in the next week or so. I only drive the truck in the morning and evening to and from work. So, it only causes me trouble on the weekend.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did change the fuel pump and relay when it the problem started this summer. I did not get any fuel pressure when it started this summer.

I bought my old ranger last fall for 700 dollars last year. I had to replace the fuel pump at that time, then I replaced the computer, which fixed a lot of issues stalling, stumbling, poor gas mileage like 14 miles to the gallon, after changing the ecm jumped it up to twenty miles to the gallon. The transmission was whining terrible in every gear but 4th, I think I read that it was the cluster gear going out, and the slave cylinder was leaking awful. So, it went off to the shop, for rebuilt transmission, clutch, flywheel, and etc. My mechanic is real cheap $200 for labor. Parts not so cheap. Then I changed the exhaust now here we are. I love my project truck.

follow up

Well, this an update, I changed out the spark plugs wires. Decided not to do the plugs, checked them instead and they all checked out good. Replaced the icm, or dis module, but it still continued to do the same thing.

So, I was basically down to the last item, the MAP sensor. I waited until the heat of the day tried to start the rig, no start. Unplugged the MAP and it started. So, now I am waiting for a new sensor to come in. So, that is what it came down to the MAP sensor. Oh well, I thank everyone for there help, I did a lot of reading here to explore all of the options.

Thanks, wjw
