I have a 87 with a 2.9 and it starts fine except when its been running. When its been running it tries to turn over but goes r-r-r- and then if Iturn it off and try a few times it will start.

The battery cables are in awful condition with a foamy substance all over them. Could that be the culprit?

It starts right up if it hasnt been running.,

Please help

Replace/clean your battery cables and terminals...that is corrosion on there and the resistance goes way up in the wire.

A failing starter will also cause this issue. It starts drawing more power when it is hot (next to exhaust) after engine has been run.
