Just picked up a 94 ford ranger xlt with about 160,000 mi on it. when in 4x4 and turning it makes some really messed up noises like crunching grinding poping. Is this the u-joints on the front axle shafts? Also when locking hubs in manualy are they supposed to click into place? I notice when putting back to free it has a positive click or detent but when going to locked it doesnt. Hope its ok. Any help would be appreciated. thanks:icon_thumby:

mine made a bunch crunching right before the pinion input bearing exploded and wiped out the d35 pig so go through the front end very carefully look at the u joints and bearings and bushings in the entire front end

First of all...you're not running it in 4x4 on the pavement with the hubs locked in right?

If it is binding and making noises while turning I would first suspect axle u joints being seized.

And yes, the hubs to solidly 'click' into the free position, but do not when turned into the lock position.
