hey guys.. going to soon pull the motor out of my 79.. its a 351m and theyre not much off 600lbs. so im gonna start making up a custom engine hoist since i cant afford one.. and i dont wanna borrow one so i can have one and then its mine for good. so im thinking of making something like this

3371619526_07c4981dc1.jpg

only made of steel, with grade 8 bolts and welded. and something rigged up so i can hook my come-a-long to it. its gonna have to be pretty damn high to clear her with 33s and 3" lift up front and to clear the rad support. but im hoping all will work well
so what do you guys have for homemade engine hoist? all ideas/input/pics welcome!

I bought a steel gantry at a yard sale for C$100.00. Steel I-beam for the top, round posts, and 4 scaffold type wheels. It's on the smallish side. I'll eventually extend it higher, maybe, someday, if I get around to it. I couldn't by the wheels for a C$100.00 so I thought great deal. Now I have to buy a chain hoist :( so I can lift bodies on and off frames.
Later,
Richard

why not build it out of wood like the pic? it probably would be cheaper than steel and if you only use it a few, it wouldn't matter much what it is made from.

the one in the pic looks like it can be disassembled easily, good idea if you don't use it all the time.

good luck.

i got one made up out of a shit load of 2x4s now and about a million bolts. its 1 peice of 2x4 for each side, 2 leg supports (45 degree angle) on each side, and (2) peices of 2x4 across the top. im gonna add more to the side peices so it isnt just one peice of 2x4 later this evening and ill post pics then.

heres what i started with:

tis alot more beefy now though.. ill try to get some pics later on

I dunno if I would be using 2x4's.....

Mines a "swingset" setup!

Short of runnin out to the cluttered garage to take a pic of just it, here's the only pic I could find of mine...............
ToolboxSportracTonneauCover1.jpg

3" stainless steel legs (originally 12' long, cut down to be 9' high in the arch of the swingset), used channel, and 3" black tubing, 3/8" thick walled for the leg supports, and for the cross bar. Comes down in 2 legs pieces & cross bar. I don't wanta make anybody cry, so I won't tell ya what I have invested in it!

It's pulled BBM, BBC, SBC, and "boat anchor" 305 cu. in. 66 GMC V6, along with used to lift the complete frontend of a 70 Charger 500 w/383 4' off the ground to install headers from underneath.:icon_twisted:
