I've got a 95' ranger with a manual 5 speed trans. I've been kicking around the idea of pulling the shifter stick off the top of the trans., cutting the stick somewhere above where it bolt to the trans. Then either making my own custom stick or buying something like a cheap used Hurst stick and then welding it all back together. That part would be cover by the boot. So has anyone else done or tried this? I'm thinking it would work and I'd have a cheaply done(not cheaply created) custom shifter stick for alot less than an aftermarket one. What do you guys think? If someone has done it, I'd love to see some pics and tell what materials you used to make it. Thanks

That will work for the look of an aftermarket shifter. BUT, the reason I put the husrt shifter in my truck wasnt for looks. I wanted a better shifter. The hurst has a shorter throw, it eliminates the stock bushings and pins that like to wear out and let the shifter flop in the breeze, and its stronger(I tend to break things).

If all you want is the look, do it. If you want a better shifter, buy one.

i dont see why it wouldnt work, i shortened the shaft in my old ranger (std cab) about 1" and got a shorter throw from it and i no longer smashed my drinks in the cup holder when going for 2nd and 4th gear. i do however seem to remember there being rubber towards the bottom of the shaft, maybe for vibration dampening, so im not sure how messy things would get if you start cutting down there.

A short throw shifter moves the pivot of the shifter to shorten the throw. By cutting a shifter shorter, you will shorten the throw a little, its not the same.
