I was merrily working away at work and my cell rings. It's my wife and all I can hear is my son absolutely wailing in the background. She then tells me that he had fallen while he was at Tae Kwon Do and broken a bone. So I bail out of work and head to the hospital. Turns out he broke the humerus in his right arm and there is all kinds of soft tissue damage. They were able to operate on him at about 2 AM. They ended up putting 3 pins in his arm to hold everything in place. He's still in hospital with Mum and we hope to have him back tomorrow. What really burns me up is the fact there was no First Aid kit or anyone trained in first aid at his dojo when this happened. The instructor actually grabbed his arm and moved it around (which probably caused some of the damage). The doctor said he has never seen a fracture that bad in a child that young. Oh man. All I want to do is take that pain for him.

sorry man, hope he gets better..
I broke my arm when i was 11. Skidoo accident.. Wen i got to the doctor(same time as your son) the faggot nurse was tryin to move my arm around with me in the chair balin at her and tellin her to frig off (yes, i was 11)..then it turns out i Dis-Located my elbow and broke a bone in my upper arm..

Wiked thing is that when this happened, i was 20 minutes away from home and drive back the whole way home on snowmobile and walked in the door and told mom i had my arm broke!

Jeff

That really sucks, hope your kid heals quick!

If it was me I'd be down there in the instructors face over it all. There's no excuse for teaching martial arts (or any physical "sport") and not having any first-aid materials around, much less any first-aid training. Twisting a kid's broken arm around... I'd be breaking his arm an twisting it around!

I've been working construction regularly since '98, and I've seen a lot of injuries in that time. Back around '04/05 I finally took a CPR and First-Aid class. Man, I learned a lot in that class and came off with a new respect for things, and IMHO, someone trained in that stuff should be handy on any construction site because even in this age of cellphones and 911, the paramedics still are not able to teleport themselves to the scene.

Damn Phil, Sorry to hear about your son. Hope everything goes ok. It's hard as hell knowing your kids are in pain and there is nothing you can do. Wish you the best., Brian

Ouch!! That has to be heartwrenching.

I hope he heals uncommonly quick!!

Nice thing is, hes young. He will be at school on monday living it up, showing all of his friends his cool cast. I wish I had got a cast when I broke my shoulder. THe hard partyour gonna have is making him take it easy in 3 weeks when its feeling better. Because its not healed but its feeling better. And then he hurts himself again playing outside...I wasnt a very brite kid at 19.

Holy crap Phil. You know if there is ANYTHING I can do I'll be there in no time. Our prayers are with your family. On a plus side, just think of the scar he'll have to tell the chicks.

There has to be a first aid kit and at least one person trained there when they are training. At least if I remember some of my Occupational Health and Safety training.

Sorry to hear about that, that sucks

Make sure you keep the pins! I had the same thing happen to me. The removed the pins with a local, after they pull it out they show it to me, I ask the Doc if I can keep them and they said no. WTF? Do you know how much those pins cost? Oh well...

Good Luck!

O yeah, And I Hade 2 Pins In..
They are Lifetime Scab-sorta-things From the pins

They'll let you keep the pins up here. They cannot re-use them. When I broke my ankle they gave me the screws and plate when they took them out after 2 years. About $700 - $1000 worth of hardware at the time. It was cool to find the serial number etched in the plate too.

Sorry to hear about it man! (at least he'll have a good story?)

I appreciate the healthcare system. And I am especially grateful that I was in pediatrics when I was a mess! Do respect the nurses and staff and stuff. But if you arn't comfortable with one or how she is treating your son, then find her supervisor!!

Sorry man!

Ouch, I had my arm ran over by my brother on a bicycle, with no tire, Only the rim!
I was about 5 at the time

I hope his heals correctly, mine didn't

Some input for the aftermath of the healing.

TAKE HIM TO PHYSIO, scar tissue is a BITCH. Physio is the solution, it is not fun, or rewarding, or whatever. But I quite my physio to early and I'm paying for it now. My tissue transplant is fused/scarred to my bone. Thus my ankle dosn't twist one way.

GO TO PHYSIO.

Yeah, the Physical terrorists do a good job at getting things back as close to normal as they can. It sucks and will hurt, better that bit of pain than a lifetime of problems.
