HMMM Ranger knowledge quiz??

Well, one problem is, who writes the test? If it's written by the people being tested, what's the point? If not, isn't that equivalent to the "rep power" thing?

I think what you're looking for is rather similar to ASE. But I'm not about to cough up the dough (or time) for that unless I need it for work (and I won't).

once again that brings up the fact that someone can get a reputation point for just about anything, this shows ACTUAL knowledge, not just regurgatated google info. if we setup the quiz for each section then we can really have a grasp if someone knows what there talkin about not someone that gets reputation for something pointless

well like i said, just dont hand them out for everything. though i suppose you do have a point. it will need to be divided into sections though, like some have already said. the bulk of advice i give is on questions about 1st and 2nd generation trucks....

ya i know, i know the most about first and second gen rangers, third and newer im admittadly nowhere near as knowledgeable,

and MAKG, i was thinkin the mods could come up with the tests, it would be a collection of questions collected by the mods, and pick through the most accurate and proper answers. it will be a community effort to create the tests, so no one person will have come up with all the questions, they will just be lucky and have some of there questions on there and if they submitted it then its not a problem them getting it right.....

AND, a ASE doesnt garuntee knowledge, i have known more then a handfull of ASE "certified" mechanics that dont know there head from a hole in the ground.

Take it from an ASE Master Tech and an I-CAR Platinum Certified Body Tech. We don't know every thing or claim to. I still have to scratch my ass, ponder and ask other tech's for answers to problem cars all the time. Having the general knowledge in theory to pass the test's is one thing, being able to put that knowledge to daily use is quite another. There is no substitute for experience. I know RBV's like the back of my hand...ask me the same type of tech question on a Toyota or Jeep...I know where to start looking for the solution to the problem, but I can't just fix it like an RBV.

It could still be interesting though.......

If I could come up with a bunch of questions along with some photos, I could create a quiz specific to the Ranger for people to play with on-line. No ASE Master Tech stuff. Just a test to see how well you know your Rangers.

Vehicle specific.

History, identification, etc.

No "how many ft-lbs do you torque a......." quiz.

how about "what size socket does xxxxxxx" take? larger specific things that are the only place a fastener of that size are used on the truck. like spring retaining nuts and Tcase yoke nuts.

if you can't figure out that its bad advise when somebody says to put sand in your crankcase then maybe you deserve a blown motor.you should verify everything you hear by researching it though other sources.whatever tests get put together will only give the clueless false confidence.just logging onto a website and asking for the answer is not a good idea.especially if if you don't know enough to tell BS from good advise.most kids don't do enough research(internet and mechanics, people they know,) to make an informed decision.look for multiple sources and look up lots of trucks that have your set up and see how they solved their problems.the search function can be pretty worthless you have to spend hours going through the right forums.tests could be amusing but probably not much more than that.

I sure hope that's a joke.

That's quite far removed from information one needs to go to the Net for.

the only thing i can think of where a 'what size socket?' question would be any good is the coil spring mounts, radius arm nuts and maybe the pitman shaft nut. situations where a standard socket set wouldnt have the socket you need. but i want to know whats gonna keep people from looking up the answers. they need to be questions you would only know from experience...

I like the idea, so long as its for fun. I know nothing about anything, yet I can still tear my whole truck down and rebuild it. I've diangnosed many problems with my truck through trial and error, which is why I only try to give advise in areas which I am confident I have the knowledge to give advice on.

However, I like the idea of the quiz so that i can find out what areas I need to improve on.

Better if mods just delete bullshit answers so it doesn't grow. The touchy feely-ness just kills me. Let me be an ass without worrying about hurting someone feelings or having to explain to the general population why I deleted someone's post.

A lot of people do learn a huge amount in a narrow field and wouldn't do well on a broad test. Part of the moderator selection is that you can sniff the bullshit out of the rosebuds.

If you think a post stinks let someone know and we can review and erase it.

well, in that regard, you could always install a button to flag a post that has inappropiate or incorrect information. that would be a quick and easy way to strip out the bullshit

and then all flagged posts would be forwarded to a mod for review

There already is one, look under anyones avatar, the three icons at the bottom. Yea the one with the triangle and exclamation mark is the button in which you have described.
