i wanted to do one once with a rotating hub for the tire mount....so the tire could rotate (some) as the vehicle was driven....mabe put a small electric motor so the tire could slowly completly rotate as you drove....that would be different....alot of work though for something you couldnt actually see as you were driving...would make others go hmmmmm though....while its a neat idea, it would (personally) bug me to have to tilt the tire out of my way every time i wanted to get into the back hatch....id be more likely to go "old school" and mount a tire to the front bumper....i did try that once, used a u-bolt meant to mount a trailer spare to a frame...i mounted it to my grille guard. worked, sure, but id just as soon have it inside the back, mounted to the side of the box...heres how a front-mounted spare looks on a ranger:
It's not that much trouble to fold the tire down, guys with swing-aways have to do the same thing just horizontal. The hardest part about this is finding the hole for the pin in the dark, I might add something to the other side of the pin for aligning purposes.
Went on a 200 mile (round trip) drive with the trailer attached, had close to 700lbs in it on the way home. Mount held up great, although I did have to make new safety chains before I left, the old ones were too short.
